RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Hannah Volom (
So.-Portage, Ind.) posted three hits and drove in three runs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Lakeland University softball team rallied for a doubleheader split with Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies bounced back from a 3-2 loss in the first game to earn a 7-5 win in the Easter weekend Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill. Lakeland is now 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the NACC while Concordia is 9-11-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference.
The Muskies trailed most of the way in the second game and were down 3-2 before a three-run sixth inning.
Haylee Dodd (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) tripled with one out but Lakeland still was in need of a big hit with two outs when it received two of them.
Sydney Meyer (
Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) continued a big run-producing stretch over the last two days with a single up the middle to score Dodd and tie the game, and Volom followed with a single up the middle to score pinch runner
Paige Kislow (
Weston, Wis.) and give the Muskies a 4-3 lead.
Hannah Nelson (
Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.) followed by reaching on an error with Volom scoring to make it 5-3, and the Muskies added two insurance runs in the seventh that would prove big later. Meyer singled to drive in Dodd with another run for her third RBI of the doubleheader, and Volom singled to score
Carlie Morrow (
Fr.-Menasha, Wis.).
Those runs came in handy when CUC scored a run to draw within 7-4 and then loaded the bases with still just one out. Nelson came on in relief of starter
Madi Johnson (
Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.), got Gina Westphal to strike out, and after an intentional walk of Cougars star catcher Becky Pieroni induced Haley Gulsby into a fly out to end the game, preserving the win for Johnson and earning a save.
Lakeland went into the second game in need of a win after dropping three straight over the last two days, including the opening game slipping away late.
The Muskies scored twice in the fourth inning, with Johnson scoring on an error and Meyer singling up the middle to score Dodd for a 2-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth, when Concordia scored three times, all with two outs. Hailey Howard and Annabella Archuletta both singled off
Skylar Hall (
Jr.-Negaunee, Mich.) to tie the game, and Nikita Robbins drove in the go-ahead run with the Cougars' fourth hit of the inning, one more than they accumulated in the first five innings combined.
Nelson had three hits in the first game including two doubles, one coming with one out in the seventh before she was stranded. Hall took the loss allowing seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
The Muskies are on the road again Wednesday when they face Alverno College for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Milwaukee in a makeup date of games originally scheduled for April 2.
