VERONA, Wis. –
Skylar Hall (
Jr.-Negaunee, Mich.) finished the year with two superb pitching performances and the Lakeland University softball team split a pair of pitchers' duels against Edgewood College to close its season Sunday at Ceniti Park.
The Muskies lost the first game 1-0 in 10 innings before reversing that score with a 1-0 victory in the second game on a warm 80-degree day in the Madison area. Lakeland concludes its season with a 14-22 overall record and finishes 7-17 in the NACC and part of a three-way tie for 10th in the 13-team league.
Hall pitched complete games in both ends of the doubleheader, a total of 16 2/3 innings in all. She allowed just seven hits and one run with 10 strikeouts, hurling a total of 181 pitches in all yet showing little fatigue, finishing with a five-hit shutout in the nightcap.
Hall was spectacular in the first game, throwing nine no-hit innings, believed to be the longest-ever for a no-hitter to go in program history, yet still wound up the hard-luck losing pitcher. Edgewood pitcher Gaby Slater matched Hall zero-for-zero on the scoreboard and was almost every bit as sharp, scattering six hits and throwing 10 shutout innings.
The Eagles (20-19 overall, 10-13 NACC) finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th. First it was Kya Loffswold leading off the inning with a single to break up the no-hitter, and Jenna Sanchez walked to put runners and first and second with nobody out. Hall was able to get Alyse Maurer to pop up on the infield, though, and then catcher
Jordan August (
So.-Schererville, Ind.) cut down the lead runner on a double steal, throwing out Loffswold at third.
Two pitches later, though, Gracie Halfman hit a line drive to short left field.
Hannah Volom (
So.-Portage, Ind.) made a diving attempt to catch it but came up just short, and the ball scooted away just enough to let Sanchez to come around to score the winning run and send the Muskies to their 10th one-run loss of the season.
Meyer went 2-for-4 in the opener, but the Muskies paid for missed opportunities, stranding 10 runners over the 10 innings. Their best chance to score came way back in the second inning, when Lakeland loaded the bases with one out but was unable to push a run across with a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
The Muskies finally took scored their first run of the game early in the second contest.
Haylee Dodd (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) singled to shortstop with one out in the top of the second, and
Sydney Meyer (
Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) hit a groundout behind the runner to move Dodd to second.
Abby Heitman (
Fr.-St. Francis, Wis.) then delivered a single to deep center field off the wall to score Dodd and give Lakeland a 1-0 lead that would prove to be all needed.
Hall scattered five hits over seven innings and never allowed a runner past second base. She received help in the second inning from her defense and the Eagles too. Halfman led off with a single and initially went to second when Camden Shepherd grounded a bunt down the first base line and was tagged out by Meyer. Apparently thinking the ball was foul, Halfman started back towards first base, and shortstop
Carlie Morrow (
Fr.-Menasha, Wis.) chased her down and made the tag just before she slid into first for a double play.
The Eagles' other best threat came in the sixth when Natalie Fields led off with a single and Sanchez singled with two outs to put runners at first and second. Maurer grounded out to
Madi Johnson (
Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) at second base to end the inning, and Hall retired Edgewood's 5-6-7 hitters in order in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game on a fly out by Grace Ott to medium right center field that
Hannah Nelson (
Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.) tracked down easily to end it.
August finished with two hits in the second game and Johnson and Dodd also had one hit each to finish with two hits on the day.
