PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Alondra Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and twin sister
Marlen Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) combined for three goals and the Lakeland University women's soccer team opened the season successfully with a 5-0 win over Northland College Friday at Taylor Field.
The Muskies gained steam as the game went along under a bright afternoon sun and defeated the LumberJills for the first time. Lakeland also avenged a 1-0 loss at Northland last season and won its season opener for the second straight year.
The Muskies broke an early stalemate with some help, getting on the board in the 34th minute on a Northland miscue.
Chloe Bartlett (
Fr.-Canton, Ill.) retrieved a pass on the right side near the corner and quickly turned, sending a cross into the middle in front of the goal. LumberJills defender Laura Hink attempted to clear it from 10 yards in front of the net, but instead deflected it right into the left corner of the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Lakeland lead.
The hosts then added a second goal with just over a minute left in the first half.
Jenna Caterino (
Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) took several touches down the middle through the defense before sending the ball through to Bartlett, who then found open freshman
Taylor Theobald (
Howards Grove, Wis.) on the right. Theobald sized up the situation before firing from 18 yards out with a bending shot over goalkeeper Elysabeth Lough and into the left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Muskies began to pull away in the second half, starting with a goal in the 61st minute. Goalkeeper
Faith Turley (
Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) hit a punt that bounced past midfield and past a Northland midfielder to
Marlen Reyes, who won the ball from a defender, dribbled to within 15 yards right of the goal and fired past Lough inside the right post for her first goal.
Lakeland continued to tilt the field as the half went on and scored again in the 69th minute.
Mikayla Belasco (
Fr.-Muskegon, Mich.) dribbled on the right side of the box before centering a pass to
Alondra Reyes, who struck it on the run from 15 yards out inside the left post to make it 4-0. The Muskies scored one more time with less than 12 minutes left, with
Brianna Love (
So.-Levittown, Pa.) starting an attack from the midfield up ahead to
Alondra Reyes, who carried it deep towards the corner, then stopped and from a sharp angle hit a looping shot over Lough and into the back of the net.
Turley and freshman
Emilie Runkel (
Burlington, Wis.) combined for a shutout and were not tested often, especially as the second half went on. Turley made three saves and denied Northland's best threat in the 54th minute. She first was able to just get a piece of a shot from Reece Gellerman from the right, and then recovered to the left post to stifle a second shot from the doorstep by Tiffany Tinsley.
The Muskies outshot the LumberJills 17-5, including a 10-3 lead in shots on goal. Lough made five saves in goal for Northland, members of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference who traveled down from Ashland, Wis.
Lakeland is home again Sunday to face Lawrence University, and the game time has now been changed from 1 p.m. to 10 a.m., to avoid the heaviest heat on a day with temperatures expected in the 90s.
