PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Lawrence University broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute and added an insurance goal late as the Lakeland University women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score Sunday in the heat at Taylor Field.
The Muskies held firm for most of the way before the Vikings broke through in the game's final third. Lakeland lost for the first time this season, while Lawrence improved to 1-1 after falling to defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament champion Concordia Wisconsin 1-0 in its opener Friday.
The Muskies had encouraging signs even while being on the defensive most of the match, and on a day with temperatures climbing into the high 80s as the game went on. The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half, an improvement after Lakeland trailed 2-0 at halftime in the teams' meeting a year ago, an eventual 3-0 win for Lawrence.
The Vikings' attack began pushing closer as the second half went on and finally paid off at 60 minutes, 25 seconds of the match. A cross from the right side by Kylie Grimes was headed in by Ava Elders, two minutes after Muskies goalkeeper
Faith Turley (
Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) had denied a shot by Elders to keep the game scoreless.
The Muskies' second half chances were limited, but Lakeland did earn its first corner kick of the game in the 76th minute. The service by
Chloe Bartlett (
Fr.-Canton, Ill.) was quickly cleared away, though, and Lakeland would not have a better chance the rest of the way.
Lawrence closed out the scoring in the 84th minute. Defender Lucia Pierce-Haig sent the ball in from the left side 35 yards out that Kylie Melonis maneuvered past a defender to win in front of the goal and deflected just enough to dribble past Turley and inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings finished with a 21-2 advantage in shots, including 10-0 in the second half. Turley made eight saves in goal for the Muskies, while Audri Klionsky had to make just one save for Lawrence, stopping a quick and hard shot from Bartlett from 25 yards out in the first half. Lakeland's other shot came from
Alondra Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), on a final charge just before halftime with a shot with a second remaining that was left of the post.
The Muskies take to the road for their next three games, including Tuesday when they travel to face Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown at 2 p.m.
