Augustana penalty kick the difference in 1-0 win over Lakeland women’s soccer squad

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Faith Turley (Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) made 10 saves in a good performance in goal but Augustana (Ill.) College converted a penalty kick early in the second half and defeated the Lakeland University women's soccer team 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Augustana's Thorson-Lucken Field.

Ximena Osorio-Rodriguez hit the penalty kick just out of Turley's reach at 55 minutes, 42 seconds of the match, and the Vikings would preserve the lead the rest of the way to drop the Muskies to 2-2 on the season. Augustana improved to 4-1 this season and defeated a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference team for the second straight day, after winning at Concordia Chicago 2-0 on Saturday.

The Vikings controlled play much of the way and held a big 24-6 advantage in shot attempts. Lakeland had limited quality attempts, but put a pair of shots on goal in a scoreless first half, with Chloe Bartlett (Fr.-Canton, Ill.) and Hanna Brouch (Jr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) getting off attempts in the final 10 minutes of the half.

The Muskies also got off the first shot of the second half, with an attempt by Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) saved by Augie keeper Kierstyn Rogers. The Vikings would not attempt their first shot until a foul called in the box in the 56th minute led to the go-ahead penalty kick.

Lakeland had just one more shot the rest of the way, a shot wide right by Marlen Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) in the 60th minute. Turley would make six saves in the second half, with her 10 saves in the game one off her career high of 11 against UW-Oshkosh in 2021.

Rogers made three saves in goal for her second shutout of the season for Augustana, which won by shutout for the first time and has an only loss coming to Lakeland's NACC rival Illinois Tech by a 4-1 score Sept. 3.

The Muskies continue their Illinois swing on Monday when they travel to take on Knox (Ill.) College in Galesburg at 4:30 p.m.
