Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Eagles use big first half to set back Muskies

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Alondra Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored her fourth goal of the season to provide a highlight for the Lakeland University women's soccer team in a 5-1 loss to Benedictine University Saturday at Taylor Field.

The Muskies dropped their fourth straight in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play as the Eagles rode a four-goal first half to the win. Lakeland dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in conference while Benedictine improved to 2-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the NACC.

The Muskies spent too much of the first 60 minutes in retreat mode and paid for it especially in a stretch of just over 30 minutes in the middle of the match. The Eagles scored all five of their goals in that stretch, including a pair of goals just before halftime and a penalty kick shortly after the half.

Lakeland had the best chance of either team early when Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) turned quickly after retrieving a loose ball after a free kick and forced Eagles goalkeeper Katherine Prochnow to deflect away a ball ticketed just inside the left post. Benedictine got on the board in the 21st minute, though, when Olivia McPherson scored, and twin sister Kiara McPherson put the Eagles ahead 2-0 just under 10 minutes later, putting away a rebound after Faith Turley (Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) stopped a first shot by Xitlali Sanchez.

The Eagles took full control in the final four minutes of the first half. A corner kick by Jocelyn Ybarra found its way through traffic to Kailyn Knudson, who scored from short range at 41:02 of the match to make it 3-0, and Ybarra was involved again just over two minutes later when she struck a long cross ahead left to right that Kaya Dreger was able to get to before Turley and put in for a 4-0 lead.

Olivia McPherson then scored her second of the match just 6:31 into the second half after a penalty kick following a Muskies foul in the box. Lakeland did answer quickly, as Reyes received the ball around midfield and dribbled through the defense, all the way to Prochnow. Reyes then dribbled right past the keeper and then from a sharp angle fired and scored inside the left post.

The Muskies held possession more in the second half, with Chloe Bartlett (Fr.-Canton, Ill.), Lia Armstrong (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Gwynn Manteufel (Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) among those helping push the ball into Benedictine's end with more frequency. Mikayla Belasco (Fr.-Muskegon, Mich.) also added two shots in the second half.

Benedictine finished with a 28-7 advantage in shot attempts, including 20-3 in the first half. Turley was kept busy much of the day and made 13 saves, while Prochnow made four saves for Benedictine.

Lakeland steps out of conference Monday to take on Mount Mary University for a 4 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
