Lakeland sweeps St. Kate’s to close out 2-1 weekend at Augsburg Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Susana Stevens (Jr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) capped a big weekend with all-tournament team honors and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team finished a solid weekend in the Twin Cities by defeating St. Catherine (Minn.) University in three sets to close play at the Augsburg University Invitational.

The Muskies swept the Wildcats 26-24, 25-11, 25-16 to finish 2-1 at the Augsburg Invite. Lakeland went 1-1 on the second and final day of the tourney after falling to host Augsburg 23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-11 in its first match of the day.

The Muskies played three good teams all coming in with winning records and finished 2-1 in the tourney, posting wins over teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Lakeland is now 3-5 overall on the season with three of its losses coming to teams ranked in the top 15 nationally in the most recent AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Stevens finished with 45 kills over three matches in making the all-tourney team, registering double-digit kill numbers in all three matches. She finished with 16 kills in the Muskies' loss to Augsburg Saturday and added a team-high 12 kills as the team's convincing win over St. Catherine.

The Muskies closed the tourney strong, handling St. Kate's by first winning a tight first set and then taking over the second and third sets. Lakeland hit .237 with 37 kills and 14 errors, held the Wildcats (4-2 overall) to .043 hitting with 25 kills and 21 errors, and finished with a 9-4 advantage in blocks.

Katie Metzler (Sr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) and Kelly Swope (Sr.-Heyworth, Ill.) also added eight kills each and Metzler posted five blocks (one solo, four assisted). Maeve Sullivan (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) also finished with a match-high 14 digs and Brelynn Scoles (Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) served four aces.

The Muskies' day also started off well, hitting a blistering .381 (21 kills, four errors) early and never trailing in winning the first set against Augsburg before things went south. The Auggies (4-4 overall) hit .333 for the match with 54 kills and just 13 errors, with Bri Van Well (19 kills) and Emily Kaup (11 kills) doing much of the damage.

Lakeland also cooled off dramatically from its hot start, hitting just .085 over the final three sets with 25 kills and 17 errors. Stevens and Caitlyn Pernsteiner (Fr.-Arpin, Wis.) combined for 30 kills, with Pernsteiner registering a season-high 14 kills, but the rest of the team combined for just 16 kills and Augsburg also added a big 13-1 advantage in service aces.

Emily Dickmann (Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) added 17 assists against the Auggies and Roseily Carrasquillo (Jr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) posted a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs. Katelyn Kitsembel (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also added 10 digs.
