Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lakeland falls on the road at Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. – Benedictine University continued to drain shots from long range in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play and the Lakeland University women's basketball team fell by a 66-53 score on the road Saturday afternoon at the Rice Center.

The Eagles made 11 three-pointers, their fifth time in six contests making at least 11 threes in a game, and won for the sixth time in eight games, improving to 7-12 overall, 7-3 in the NACC. The Muskies dropped to 4-14 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

Lakeland shot 36.4% for the game, making 20 of 55 field goals, slightly better than the Eagles' 35.5% mark (22 of 62). Benedictine made 11 of 34 from long range, though, while the Muskies connected on 4 of 14 from three-point land.

Lakeland played from behind almost the entire game, leading just once at 7-6 just over five minutes into the game on a three-pointer by A.T. Bartlett (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.). Benedictine would score the next six points and would never trail again, though the Muskies still were within 15-14 after Kerstin Sauerbrei (Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) hit a jumper with 1 minute, 56 seconds left in the first quarter.

Benedictine followed with a 10-0 run capped by a Jordan Carlquist three-pointer making it 25-14 with 5:19 left in the second quarter, and the Eagles were in control from there. Lakeland would close within 29-22 late in the half on a basket by Lauryn Johnson (So.-Kenosha, Wis.), but Benedictine finished the half with the final four points to lead 33-22 at the break.

The Muskies stuck around in the third quarter and were down 35-27 after Meghan MacPhee (Fr.-Marquette, Mich.) made two free throws with 4:24 left in the period. MacPhee scored seven points in the quarter on her way to a career-high nine points, all in the second half, and her three-point play with 2:03 remaining in the third brought Lakeland back within 43-34. Benedictine would go on a 14-4 run to put the game away, though, with Sierra Skack's offensive rebound and putback giving the hosts their largest lead of the game at 57-38 with seven minutes left.

MacPhee and Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) led the Muskies with nine points each with Bartlett, Alexis Johnson (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Jenna Shea (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) adding eight points apiece. Sauerbrei led the team with six rebounds and three steals and Caterino posted two blocked shots.

Skack scored 11 points to lead Benedictine, which had 11 different players make at least one field goal. Makenzie Carroll hauled down 12 rebounds as the Eagles finished with a 45-37 rebounding advantage.

Lakeland is on the road again Monday when it travels to face Alverno College for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee in a game rescheduled from Jan. 13.
