PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team did its best to slow down the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's top team but fell to Edgewood College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.
The Eagles broke through the Muskies' defensive effort late in the first half to open the scoring and added a pair of goals less than eight minutes apart early in the second half. Edgewood stayed undefeated at 8-0-1 in the NACC and undefeated in its last 15 games at 13-1-2 overall, while the Muskies fell in their final home match of the season and dropped to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in conference.
Lakeland came in with a plan to clog up the Eagles defensively, starting with five defenders on the back line, and it worked well for the first 27 minutes. Edgewood had few good opportunities, even as it largely held possession, but the visitors broke through late in the 28th minute. A cross from the left side by Brandon Kaup got through the defense to striker Miguel Konde Guo, who redirected it in a few yards in front of the goal for the match's first score.
The Muskies kept it within a goal into halftime, but the Eagles scored a second goal 4:14 into the second half. Noah Hook sent a cross into the box from near the left corner and defender Jack Knight went over a Lakeland defender to head it in to make it 2-0.
Edgewood added its third goal in the 58th minute, quickly slicing through the defense after a throw-in from near midfield. Konde Guo played a pass ahead between two defenders to Joshua Kerr, who chipped it over goalkeeper
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) to make the score 3-0.
The score remained that way the rest of the way, with both teams substituting freely the final 30 minutes. The Eagles finished with a 19-1 advantage in shot attempts, with reserve
Chris Gallego (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) registering Lakeland's lone shot attempt in the 31st minute among 23 Muskies to participate.
English made seven saves and
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) added three saves after coming on with just over 23 minutes left.
The Muskies are on the road for their final three regular season matches, including Wednesday when they travel to face Marian University in Fond du Lac at 7 p.m.
