Penalty kick is the difference as Muskies fall to Eagles on Senior Day

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Grace Johnson converted a penalty kick for Edgewood College in the 66th minute and the Lakeland University women's soccer team took a tough 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon on its Senior Day at Taylor Field.

A tripping call on the far right side of the goalkeeper's area gave the Eagles their best chance of the match and Johnson put it in for the decider in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest. Edgewood improved to 9-5-2 overall and 3-5-1 in conference while Lakeland dropped to 1-9-3 overall and 0-6-3 in the NACC.

The Eagles held an upper hand for a good portion of the match, though quality opportunities were few. Ingrid Steinbock (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made eight saves for the Muskies, and almost all of the shots came from straight on and 20 yards out or more that she gobbled up cleanly.

Edgewood was on the attack in the 66th minute with Ella Miller right of the goal, and she took a touch attempting to push the ball in front of her towards the goal. Steinbock would get to the loose ball in plenty of time, but a Lakeland defender's challenge attempt instead caught Miller on the leg, and she stayed down for a time. After a delay a penalty kick was awarded, and Johnson scored with a shot into the upper right corner.

The Muskies attempted to make a charge late, but struggled to generate much until the final minute. With the Eagles trying to bleed the clock, Allison Solberg-Kieler (Jr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) first forced a turnover past midfield, then took the ball into the offensive end and eventually drew a foul near the sideline to give Lakeland a free kick with less than 30 seconds left. Edgewood cleared the kick out briefly, but defender Mikayla Belasco (So.-Muskegon, Mich.) sent it back in and Chloe Bartlett (So.-Canton, Ill.) turned with nine seconds left and shot from 30 yards out, a final attempt that went wide right of the goal.

Edgewood finished with an 18-2 advantage in shots and a slimmer 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Lakeland's three corners came in the second half, but their best threat until the final minute was a shot by Lea Armstrong (So.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) high in the 78th minute.

The Muskies' best offensive chance came in the first half in a scoreless game, when Armstrong stole an Eagles pass, advanced it to ahead and Addison Weed (Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) sent a pass ahead to Bartlett on the run wide on the right side. Bartlett took it all the way down to the end line and centered a pass that went just behind Malaya Sperber (Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) in front of the goal.

Lakeland honored five seniors before the match, including Jenna Caterino (Stanton, Mich.), Gwynn Manteufel (Kewaskum, Wis.), Alondra Reyes (Milwaukee, Wis.), Marlen Reyes (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Abby Runkel (Burlington, Wis.).

The Muskies are home again for their next match Wednesday when they host Marian University at 7 p.m.
