PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Halle Boldt (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored 18 points to lead six scoring in double figures and the Lakeland University women's basketball team set a program record for points in a quarter in a 100-52 win over Alverno College Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies scored 45 points in the third quarter, easily breaking the record of 38 points in a quarter set earlier this season against Maranatha Baptist University. A close game at halftime quickly turned into a rout as Lakeland won its second straight game and second game in four days to improve to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies led 31-24 at halftime but made 17 of 23 shots in the third quarter (73.9%). Lakeland scored many of its points on layups, turning 13 Inferno turnovers into 22 points, and even hit 3 of 4 from three-point range in the period.
Boldt scored 14 of her 18 points in the third, making 7 of 8 shots and adding three steals. The Muskies started the quarter on a 24-3 run and
Alexis Johnson (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) finished it with a layup with three seconds left for a 76-39 lead after three quarters.
Lakeland put away a shorthanded Alverno team quickly in the second half after a first half that included a strong start followed by shooting struggles. The Muskies scored the first 13 points of the game, making five of their first six shots. The hosts needed just three seconds after tip-off for Boldt to score on a layup,
A.T. Bartlett (
Jr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored seven points early and Johnson hit a baseline jumper to make it 13-0 just over three minutes in.
Lakeland would continue to hold the lead, but cooled off significantly, making just 7 of its remaining 30 shots in the half including missing 11 straight from three-point range. Alverno (2-5 overall, 0-2 NACC) hung around and then closed the half on an 8-0 run just before halftime. Riley Spencer hit a pair of three-pointers from the right corner and Shiauna Nixon-Boyd's jumper brought the Inferno within 31-24 going into the break.
Boldt finished making 9 of 11 from the field and also added five steals. Bartlett scored 17 points and paced the team with four assists and
Peyton Madl (
Fr.-New Lenox, Ill.) added 16 points including four three-pointers.
Johnson and
Meghan MacPhee (
So.-Marquette, Mich.) both added 13 points each, with Johnson also posting five steals and MacPhee adding six rebounds.
Jenna Caterino (
Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) also scored 10 points and
Lauryn Johnson (
Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) finished with a career-best 12 rebounds, including 11 in the first half.
Lakeland finished shooting 50.6% (40 of 79), including a robust 65.1% in the second half (28 of 43). The Muskies also notched a 48-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a 40-0 lead in bench points.
Nixon-Boyd scored a game-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds for Alverno, which dressed just seven players. The Inferno finished shooting 33.3% (18 of 54) and committed 35 turnovers.
Lakeland takes a break for final exams and returns to play Friday when it hosts Northland College at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
