Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Muskies win game of runs, holding off Sabres for third straight win

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Jenna Shea (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) scored nine straight points as part of a game-changing run midway through the second half and the Lakeland University women's basketball team won its third straight game with a 76-71 victory over Marian University Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

In a frantic, fast-paced game that had a number of momentum swings, the Muskies put together the biggest surge with a big third quarter and start of the fourth. Lakeland then held on late to defeat the Sabres for the second time this season and win its third game in six days.

The Muskies improved to 7-14 overall and 5-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with another productive offensive outing. Lakeland scored at least 76 points for the third straight game, rebounding from cold shooting early to hit 28 of 67 shots (41.8%), including 10 of 27 from three-point range (37.0%).

The Muskies still spent most of the game in chase mode after the Sabres (6-15 overall, 4-8 NACC) built a 20-6 lead early. Lakeland rallied several times only to fall back behind again, but took the lead for good with a lightning-quick 19-0 run over a stretch of 3 minutes, 32 seconds bookending the break between the third and fourth quarters.

A three-pointer by A.T. Bartlett (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) tied the game at 51-51 with 1:37 left in the third, and then Shea put on the show over the rest of the period. The freshman hit a three-pointer, came up with two straight steals and layups while playing at the top of a Muskies' zone defense, and then got out ahead of the pack for another layup after a Lakeland rebound of a Marian miss just before the quarter clock expired to make it 60-51 after three periods.

Lakeland continued its burst with a quick seven points to start the fourth quarter, with Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) scoring twice and Bartlett hitting another three to make it 67-51 with 8:05 left in the game. Even with that 16-point cushion, though, the Muskies still were made to sweat on multiple occasions late.

Marian followed the Lakeland run by scoring 12 straight points of its own, and Lexi Brakebush's layup while being fouled cut the Muskies lead to 67-63 with still 4:40 left. Brakebush missed the free throw, but Kiara Williams grabbed the offensive rebound for the Sabres and after missing one putback was fouled and went to the line to shoot two more free throws.

Williams also would miss both foul shots, though, and Kerstin Sauerbrei (Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) gave Lakeland some cushion again with a driving layup to make it 69-63. Caterino then went to work scoring the Muskies' next five points, and her free throw put Lakeland ahead 74-66 with 1:03 to play.

Marian still wasn't finished, as Williams scored inside, Chelsea King split two free throws and then Brianna Guelig stole the ball and scored to draw the Sabres within 74-71 with 23 seconds left. Sauerbrei would come through to ice the game, though, capping a big day by making two free throws with 15.4 seconds left for what would be the final points of the game.

Sauerbrei also had a big part in Lakeland's first quick-strike rally earlier in the game, when the Muskies needed just over three minutes to cut a 14-point deficit to two. Marian held a 20-6 lead late in a first quarter where Lakeland made just 3 of 17 field goals despite plenty of good looks, but the ice-cold Muskies warmed up fast with a 14-2 run to get back in the game. Sauerbrei highlighted the spurt with three straight three-pointers in a stretch of 56 seconds, all on the fast break, and two free throws from Caris Jaeger (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) brought Lakeland within 22-20 with 7:41 left in the second quarter.

Marian built the lead back up to nine points at 30-21, but Lakeland followed with 10 straight points, and a layup by Meghan MacPhee (Fr.-Marquette, Mich.) on the break after a feed from Bartlett put the Muskies ahead 31-30, only for the Sabres to fight back with a 12-1 run of their own to take a 41-32 halftime lead.

Sauerbrei tied her season high with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Shea scored a career-high 15 points and Bartlett also added 15 points, with Caterino also scoring 14 points. Bartlett also added team highs with eight rebounds and six assists and MacPhee added six rebounds off the bench. Jaeger also added six points off the bench, all in the first half to get the Muskies on track after early offensive struggles.

King scored a game-high 24 points for Marian, which shot 43.1% (28 of 65) but made just 3 of 26 from three-point range (11.5%). Williams also added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Lakeland looks to continue its season-long winning streak when it goes on the road for its next game at Dominican University Wednesday at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
