GLENDALE, Wis. – A week-long layoff from games did nothing to cool the bats for the Lakeland University softball team, which rolled to another doubleheader sweep against Alverno College Saturday.
The Muskies hit the ball early and often in defeating the Inferno by scores of 17-0 and 9-5 at Maslowski Park in Glendale, where the games were moved to after Alverno's home field was too damp after heavy rains this week. Lakeland improved to 16-4 overall this season and 7-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, and also stretched its winning streak to seven games, the Muskies' longest win streak since 2016.
Lakeland finished with 33 hits over the two games, including nine hits in the first inning of the opening game alone. The Muskies started the afternoon by batting around, with eight consecutive hits after
Madi Johnson (
Sr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) hit a one-out triple. The next seven batters all followed with run-scoring hits, including a triple by
Abby Heitman (
So.-St. Francis, Wis.) and doubles by
Juliana Hall (
Sr.-Portage, Ind.),
Peyton Harlow (
So.-La Porte, Ind.) and
Sydney Meyer (
So.-Crown Point, Ind.). Johnson also added an RBI single for her second hit of the inning to give Lakeland an 8-0 lead before Alverno's first at bat.
The Muskies would continue to batter Alverno pitching with five more runs in the second and three more in the fourth. Meyer hit her second RBI double in the second inning,
Carlie Morrow (
So.-Menasha, Wis.) also hit a two-run single in the inning and
Mackenzie Ondrejcak (
Fr.-Aurora, Ill.) added a pinch hit two-run single in the fourth.
Skylar Hall (
Sr.-Negaunee, Mich.) breezed to her third shutout this season, allowing five hits and striking out four. Hall's third strikeout was the 200th of her Lakeland career, making her just the second Muskie to record at least 200 career K's.
Lakeland received a stiffer challenge in the second game as Alverno (2-10 overall, 0-6 NACC) scored first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Muskies answered with a run in the second, though, took control with four runs in the third and then pulled away late with four runs over the final two innings.
Maddie Raske (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to continue a big day on her birthday that also saw her go 3-for-3 in the opener with two RBIs. Meyer also continued a big day going 3-for-4 at the plate with two more RBIs, and Johnson and
Hannah Nelson (
Sr.-Loves Park, Ill.) also added three hits each. Nelson had a big hit in the sixth with a two-out double to give Lakeland a 6-4 lead after Alverno had scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close within a run. Johnson also reached on a bunt single later in the inning and Raske added an RBI triple to push the lead to 8-4.
Johnson started the second game in the circle and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Nelson came on in the fifth and earned her second save of the season, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing five hits and one run with a strikeout.
The Muskies are back in action tomorrow when they host St. Norbert College for a doubleheader starting at noon.
