PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Abby Heitman (
So.-St. Francis, Wis.) and
Juliana Hall (
Sr.-Portage, Ind.) had big days at the plate and the Lakeland University softball team continued to roll, sweeping Ripon College in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon on campus.
The Muskies outslugged the Red Hawks 13-10 in the first game before having an easier time in the second game with an 8-0 victory in five innings. Lakeland improved to 20-4 on the season and has won 11 straight games, the Muskies' longest winning streak since taking 12 straight games late in the season in 2015.
Heitman finished with four hits on the day and four runs scored, and Hall added five hits, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the first game, plus a combined five runs and four runs batted in for the afternoon. The two also accounted for a combined six extra-base hits, with Heitman hitting two triples and a double and Hall adding another triple plus two doubles.
Lakeland displayed its speed on the bases in the second inning of the opening game to quickly erase an early 5-0 deficit after Ripon (2-12 overall) had scored five times in the top of the inning to take the lead. Heitman, Hall and
Carlie Morrow (
So.-Menasha, Wis.) all hit triples in the inning, with Hall driving in Heitman to get the Muskies on the board and Morrow later hitting a triple and then coming in to score on the play to tie the game after an error by the second baseman on a relay throw from the outfield.
Lakeland took the lead at the end of the inning when
Hannah Nelson (
Sr.-Loves Park, Ill.) and
Maddie Raske (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) executed a double-steal, with Raske stopping just before getting to second base and getting caught in a rundown long enough to let Nelson score from third to put the Muskies ahead 6-5. Lakeland would never trail again, putting three more runs on the board in the third and then staying a step ahead even as Ripon scored at least one run in each of the final four innings.
Hall,
Jordan August (
Jr.-Schererville, Ind.) and Morrow all drove in runs in the third inning, and Raske's groundout in the fourth allowed
Madi Johnson (
Sr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) to score and make it 10-7. Hall would also score later in the inning after
Peyton Harlow (
So.-La Porte, Ind.) reached on an error, and the Muskies scored two more in the sixth after Heitman hit an RBI triple and then scored on a passed ball for a 13-9 lead.
The Red Hawks still gave Lakeland some nervous moments in the seventh, scoring a run and putting two on with one out before Nelson got MariaFernanda Lerma to ground back to the pitcher. Nelson threw to third to retire the lead runner, and Hall's throw across the diamond was just in time to get Lerma for a game-ending 1-5-3 double play.
Nelson pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief of starter
Skylar Hall (
Sr.-Negaunee, Mich.) and earned the win, allowing 13 hits and five runs with a strikeout on a day where pitchers from both teams struggled with a tight strike zone.
Lakeland had a smoother time of it in the second game, striking for four runs in the first inning and two more in both the second and third to build a big lead early.
Hall hit a two-run double in the first to start the scoring, and Raske and Harlow both hit sacrifice flies in the four-run first. The Muskies then took advantage of two Ripon errors to push across two runs without a hit in the second, and added two more in the third when Nelson smacked an RBI double to straightaway center to make it 8-0.
Johnson pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out three before
Natalie Miller (
So.-North Fond du Lac, Wis.) came on and pitched a scoreless fifth, allowing one hit. Nelson and
Haylee Dodd (
So.-Kenosha, Wis.) had two hits each in the second game, and Lakeland took advantage of five Ripon errors, with four of its eight runs unearned against Ripon pitcher Kenzie Pahang.
The Muskies and Red Hawks were meeting for the first time in 16 years, since Ripon took both ends of a doubleheader at Ripon in 2008.
Lakeland is back in action and at home again Saturday when it hosts Rockford University for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
