MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Hannah Nelson (
Sr.-Loves Park, Ill.) went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game as the Lakeland University softball team bounced back from a loss to finish with a doubleheader split with Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday afternoon at MSOE Raiders Field.
The Muskies rallied for a 9-7 win in the second game after falling by a 7-2 score in the opener. The loss was a blow towards Lakeland's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season championship hopes, but left the team still with plenty to play for going into its final conference doubleheader Saturday against Concordia University Wisconsin.
The Muskies (31-7 overall, 18-4 NACC) dropped a game behind Concordia Wisconsin and Dominican University in the loss column in the NACC standings. Lakeland can ensure a finish against of CUW with two wins on Saturday, though, and would keep alive hopes of a championship. Even a split on Saturday, though, would give the Muskies a chance at finishing second, depending on the results of Monday's doubleheader between Concordia and Dominican.
Lakeland did set a new program record for most wins in a season, besting the previous mark of 30 wins in 2009. The Muskies did so with their offense in the second game, as a tough day for the pitching staff was buffered by Lakeland hammering out 17 hits in the nightcap.
Nelson had four hits in the second game with a single, double and triple and also scored three runs. Including the first game, the senior hit for the cycle on the day, also hitting a home run in the first game to open the game's scoring.
The Muskies also took a 3-0 lead in the second game but then had to rally after MSOE (17-21 overall, 12-10 NACC) scored five times in the bottom of the third inning, including a bases-loaded three-run double by Jenna Trewyn. Lakeland would retake the lead with two runs in the fifth, including
Abby Heitman (
So.-St. Francis, Ill.) stealing home on the back end of a double steal, and answered a Raiders run in the bottom of the inning with two more in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Maddie Raske (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) singled to drive in Nelson, and Heitman followed by reaching on an infield hit with
Madi Johnson (
Sr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) scoring.
Carlie Morrow (
So.-Menasha, Wis.) added an RBI double in the seventh to make it 9-6, and the Raiders were held to a run in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson picked up the win while allowing 10 hits and a season-high seven runs, and also went 3-for-5 at the plate as part of a five-hit day.
The opening game for the Muskies went sour starting in the third inning.
Skylar Hall (
Sr.-Negaunee, Mich.) set the Raiders down in order in the first two innings, but MSOE scored three times in the third to go ahead 3-1, scoring on a pair of bases-loaded walks and another hit batter with the bases loaded.
The Raiders added two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, while Lakeland's bats were foiled by Raiders pitcher Katie Pollock. The freshman allowed seven hits but just two runs in a complete game after getting 17 fly ball outs out of the Muskies over seven innings.
Johnson and Raske both had two hits each, but Lakeland missed a number of opportunities early in the game to score runs, stranding five over the first three innings, including runners at third in all three frames. Hall took the loss, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three hits and three runs.
Lakeland takes on Concordia Wisconsin tomorrow for two games starting at noon in Mequon.
