PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Eduardo Campuzano (
Jr.-Hinckley, Ill.) assisted on the first two scores, including the tiebreaking goal by
Austin Eigenberger (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) early in the second half, and the Lakeland University men's soccer team pull away from the University of Wisconsin-Stout for a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field.
Eigenberger scored the first of four second-half goals for the Muskies, who stepped on the gas late with three goals in the final 17 minutes to defeat the Blue Devils in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Five different players scored goals in all and Lakeland interim head coach
Kyle Quintell picked up his first career win as the Muskies improved to 1-1.
Lakeland took the lead for good 6 minutes, 17 seconds into the second half, when consistent pressure early in the half paid off. Campuzano sent a cross from the right side to Eigenberger in the middle, and he scored from 10 yards out straight on for his first collegiate goal and a 2-1 lead.
Eigenberger was one of five different Muskies to score, including four freshmen scoring their first career goals.
Dunia Wangu (
Milwaukee, Wis.) joined Eigenberger in the club later in the second half and gave Lakeland some breathing room when he took advantage of a turnover in the box right in front of the goal, and beat goalkeeper Chase Holub one-on-one from 12 yards out to make it 3-1 in the 74th minute.
The Muskies then tacked on two more goals in a span of less than two minutes in the final minutes.
Gavin Pinchart (
Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) sent a ball ahead up the middle of the field to
Dirk Dell Adema (
Jr.-Howards Grove, Wis.), whose shot inside the left post made it 4-1 with 8:06 left in the match. Eigenberger then notched his first assist 1:57 later, directing a pass from Wangu to
Porter Gigstead (
Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), who got behind his defender on the right side of the box. Gigstead then caught Holub leaning to his right with a shot inside the right post for his first collegiate goal.
Lakeland and Stout were tied at 1-1 after 45 minutes, with the Muskies controlling play early and scoring the opener in the 16th minute.
Justin Cain (
Fr.-Houston, Texas) took a free kick from midfield and sent it to the middle to Campuzano, who flicked it ahead to
Max Mirhashemi (
Appleton, Wis.), who quickly fired from 15 yards out for his first goal and a 1-0 lead.
UW-Stout (0-2 overall) began to turn momentum late in the first half, and the first-year Blue Devils scored the first goal in program history in the 37th minute. Reserve defender Malachy Driscoll sent a ball far ahead from well beyond midfield, and Luca Jones scored to tie the match at 1-1.
The Muskies finished with a modest 17-14 advantage in shot attempts but a much larger 12-4 lead in shots on goal.
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) made three saves in goal for Lakeland.
The Muskies are home for their next match this Saturday, again facing a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent when they host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. at Taylor Field.
