PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team had plenty of opportunities but the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point made better use of its chances and defeated the Muskies 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.
The Pointers scored single goals in each half and won for the first time in program history, improving to 1-0-2 in their first season of play. Lakeland outshot UW-Stevens Point for the match but couldn't record its second straight win over a first-year Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference program and dropped to 1-2 overall.
UWSP controlled play for much of the first 30 minutes and broke through in the 25th minute to take the lead. Marcelo Chavez struck a cross in front of the goal mouth to the back of the right post to Cameron Jochimsen, who headed it to Devin Wilkerson right in front of the goal. Wilkerson tapped it in for his third goal of the season and gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead.
Stevens Point was outshooting Lakeland 4-2 at that point, but the Muskies would outshoot the Pointers 13-6 the rest of the match, including finishing with an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Lakeland especially picked up the attack in the second half, and had one of its best chances in the 63rd minute.
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) ran onto a ball from 30 yards out after a pass back from
Austin Eigenberger (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) and hit a blast that UWSP goalkeeper Jacob Havlik had to make a diving save on.
The Pointers added an insurance goal a few minutes later when Blake Rhodes on a run up the right sideline centered a pass perfectly to Jack Hudson, who easily tapped it into the goal to make it 2-0. Lakeland had another good chance on a long shot in the 76th minute when a shot by
Aldo Rangel (
Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) took a tricky bounce and nearly ate up Havlik before he deflected it away for a corner kick.
Dunia Wangu (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) followed a couple minutes later with another shot after a pass back by Eigenberger that Havlik had to knock away for another corner kick.
Lakeland finished with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in the second half and a 15-10 lead in shot attempts in the game. Havlik made eight saves for UWSP while
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) stopped three shots for the Muskies. Heiman's best save came on a breakaway for the Pointers' Arun Krishna with less than two minutes left, and pursuing defender
Justin Cain (
Fr.-Houston, Texas) was in position to clear a rebound attempt off the goal line to keep the score at 2-0.
Lakeland is back on the field Monday when it travels to face Beloit College for a 4 p.m. start in Beloit.
