Johnson, Pautz earn first wins for Muskies women’s tennis in dual loss to Cougars

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Mary Johnson (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Emily Pautz (Sr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) recorded the first singles and doubles match wins of the season for the Lakeland University women's tennis team in a 4-2 loss to Concordia University Chicago Wednesday on the courts at Plymouth High School.

Johnson and Pautz both were double winners, teaming up for a doubles win and then also winning their respective singles matches. The wins weren't quite enough for a dual victory, as three forfeits allowed Concordia Chicago to take the doubles point plus two singles matches in the seven-point format Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference dual.

Johnson and Pautz posted a solid 6-1 victory over CUC's Mary Curtis and Kamila Giza at No. 2 doubles. The duo recorded their first win as a team and the first match win of the season for the Muskies (0-3 overall, 0-2 NACC).

Johnson also handled Concordia's Amirah Shakir 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles for her first varsity singles win. Pautz later recorded her first varsity singles victory by winning in three sets at No. 3 singles, defeating Demi Presto Martin 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Olivia Heling (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) also was well on her way to her first victory of the season as she led Tatiana Overton 7-6 (7-3), 5-2 at No. 1 singles when that match was called unfinished due to darkness. Had that match finished, the deciding point in the dual would've come from the No. 1 doubles match, where Overton and Jessica Parker edged Heling and Alexis Labonte (Fr.-Portage, Ind.) 6-4 to give the Cougars two of the three doubles wins and the doubles match point.

Lakeland is on the road for its next four matches, starting with a trip to Mequon to face Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday at 10 a.m.
