APPLETON, Wis. – Zach Dale headed in a free kick in the 58th minute to put Lawrence University ahead and the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell by a 2-1 score Saturday night at the Banta Bowl.
Max Mirhashemi (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) scored for the third time in four matches but the Muskies dropped their third straight and fell to 1-4 overall. The Vikings won for the first time, improving to 1-3-2 overall, including 1-2-2 against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponents.
Mirhashemi gave the Muskies an early lead, albeit one that would last less than a minute.
Porter Gigstead (
Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) assisted on Mirhashemi's team-leading third goal of the season at 15 minutes, 17 seconds of the match to give Lakeland a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings tied the score exactly 59 seconds later, after a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Aidan Greer took the kick and converted it to tie the match at 1-1, a score that would remain into halftime.
The tie held into the second half, until Lawrence was awarded a free kick from the left sideline just outside the 18-yard box. Greer lofted a ball into heavy traffic in front of the goal that Dale won out of the air and headed into the back of the net at 57:22 to put the Vikings ahead.
The Muskies gained an advantage in the 63rd minute when a red card was called on Lawrence's Rei Otsuka, putting the hosts a man down the remainder of the match. Lakeland had chances, outshooting the Vikings 6-1 over the remainder of the match, but the Muskies were held without a shot in the final nine minutes.
Mirhashemi led Lakeland with three shot attempts and
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) and
Gavin Pinchart (
Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) added two shots each. Goalkeeper
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) made five saves.
Lakeland is back home Wednesday for its NACC opener against St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
