Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Muskies cruise past Blue Angels 4-0 for first win

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Freshman Addison Weed (Tinley Park, Ill.) scored twice and the Lakeland University women's soccer team controlled play throughout in a 4-0 win over Mount Mary University Tuesday night in a non-conference match at Taylor Field.

Mikayla Belasco (So.-Muskegon, Mich.) and Marlen Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added goals and the Muskies were victorious in their first home appearance of the season. Lakeland left a number of opportunities on the table but still improved to 1-1 on the season.

Weed scored her first two collegiate goals, including the opener just over eight minutes in. Reyes started the attack from the middle with a pass to Lia Armstrong (So.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) on the left side. Armstrong took the ball down to near the end line and crossed it in front of the goal to a wide-open Weed for the easy tap in and a 1-0 lead.

Lakeland had plenty of chances the rest of the half but came up empty until the 31st minute. Belasco took a free kick from just outside the keepers' box on the left side at a sharp angle, and her kick was perfectly placed under the crossbar and over Mount Mary goalkeeper Brianna Brown for her first goal of the season.

The Muskies added on one more late in the half, as Alondra Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) sent a perfect ball through the defense to her sister Marlen Reyes on the run. Marlen Reyes took one touch and fired a low shot on the ground out of Brown's reach and inside the left post to make it 3-0.

Lakeland was frustrated time and again in its attempts to add onto the lead in the second half, with near misses such as a shot by Jenna Caterino (Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) hitting the crossbar in the 57th minute. The Muskies finally tacked on one more goal with just over 3 1/2 minutes left in the game, as hustling defender Gwynn Manteufel (Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) passed ahead, made a run and received a pass deep into the offensive end, and then passed to Weed, who turned and scored from 13 yards out to complete the scoring.

Lakeland outshot Mount Mary 45-0, including 26 shots on goal. Marlen Reyes led the Muskies with 12 shots, Weed took eight shots, Alondra Reyes posted six shots and Armstrong added five shots. In all 15 different Lakeland players and 15 of the 17 to see action in the field registered at least one shot attempt.

Brown made 22 saves in goal for Mount Mary, which dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Lakeland has a break of more than a week before its next game, when the Muskies travel to face Beloit College next Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. in Beloit.
