Beloit pulls away late against shorthanded Lakeland

Box Score BELOIT, Wis. – Beloit College scored three goals in a span of four minutes in the second half to blow open a one-goal game and the Lakeland University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road Wednesday night in a non-conference match.

The Muskies held off the rush for a while but eventually paid for playing almost the entire game one player down. Lakeland played for the first time in more than a week and dropped to 1-2 this season, while Beloit earned its first win and is now 1-3-1.

The match was not even four minutes old when the field tilted heavily in the host Buccaneers' favor. A red card for a hard tackle from behind left the Muskies with just 10 players on the field the rest of the match, and Beloit capitalized almost immediately, as Anna Williams scored with an assist from Megan Thompson just over two minutes later at 5:55 of the match to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.

Lakeland was on defense much of the match but stayed within a goal with goalkeeper Ingrid Steinbock (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) making nine saves in the first 60 minutes. One came in the 51st minute after a dubious call for a foul in the box gave Beloit a penalty kick, but Steinbock swallowed up the attempt to keep it a one-goal game.

The Buccaneers finally broke through for a second goal in the 63rd minute when Thompson scored with an assist by Natalie Ortiz to make it 2-0. The floodgates then opened for a bit as Ortiz scored at 64:25 and Thompson added another goal in the 67th minute to make it 4-0 and put the match out of reach.

Steinbock finished making 11 saves while regularly kept at attention as Beloit finished with a 34-3 lead in shots and a 15-0 margin in shots on goal. Chloe Bartlett (So.-Canton, Ill.), Marlen Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Addison Weed (Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) registered the shot attempts for the Muskies.

The Muskies are back home Saturday to host Augustana (Ill.) College at 1 p.m. at Taylor Field.
