BELOIT, Wis. –
Max Mirhashemi (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) scored his second goal of the season but a two-minute stretch cost the Lakeland University men's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Beloit College Monday afternoon.
The Buccaneers scored two goals 1 minute, 55 seconds apart within the first five minutes of the second half and the Muskies were in chase mode the rest of the way. Lakeland had opportunities for more in both halves but dropped to 1-3 overall on the season.
Beloit (1-4 overall) scored on a pair of quick strikes, including the first just over three minutes into the second half. Anthony Vogt carried the ball down the right side all the way into range and scored inside the left post from 15 yards out to break the ice.
The Buccaneers scored again at 49:58 of the match, with Benjamin Eilbes won a ball from a pair of Muskies defenders 25 yards out in front of the goal. Eilbes then passed to Santiago Gomez, who scored from 18 yards out again from the right to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Lakeland responded in the 58th minute, eventually capitalizing after a corner kick.
Gavin Pinchart (
Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) hit a cross from near the end line right of the goal to Mirhashemi on the left, and the freshman's header past Beloit goalkeeper David Staats bounced twice before crossing the goal line to cut the Buccaneers' lead in half.
The Muskies would not score again, though. Mirhashemi had another chance 92 seconds after his goal but was stopped by Staats, and
Austin Eigenberger (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) had a pair of shots on goal that were both saved by Staats.
Lakeland finished the game with a 17-13 lead in shots, including a 14-8 margin in shots on goal. The Muskies had 10 shots on goal in the first half alone but could not break through, and Staats finished with 13 saves in the game. Eigenberger,
Dirk Dell Adema (
Jr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) and
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) all paced Lakeland with three shot attempts each.
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) made six saves in goal for the Muskies.
Lakeland is on the road again for its next game, a non-conference tilt at Lawrence University Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Appleton.
