Eagles pull back away late to top Lakeland in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's basketball team erased a big deficit but another run in the fourth quarter by Edgewood College was too much to overcome in a 76-63 loss on the road Saturday afternoon at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Muskies used a big third quarter to get back in the game but fell to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Edgewood pulled into a tie with Lakeland in the standings, improving to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the NACC after six games of the 16-game league schedule.

The Muskies trailed 42-30 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 17-3 over the first 6 minutes, 25 seconds of the second half to take the lead. An offensive rebound and putback by Sadie Grabow (Fr.-Bourbonnais, Ill.) tied it at 45 and Meghan MacPhee (So.-Marquette, Mich.) scored inside to give Lakeland a 47-45 advantage, its first lead since the game's early minutes.

Edgewood inched back ahead at the end of the quarter and took a 51-49 lead into the fourth. The Eagles would then take charge, outscoring the Muskies 16-4 over the next 6 1/2 minutes. Including the end of the third quarter, Edgewood's run was 20-4 when Jordan Carlquist hit two free throws to make it 67-53 with 3:34 left in the game, and Lakeland got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

The Eagles controlled the first half by pounding the ball inside, scoring 32 of their 42 points in the paint over the opening 20 minutes. Kallie Norby made 7 of 7 shots in scoring 15 points in the first quarter as the hosts led 24-16 after one period, and Edgewood opened its largest lead at 36-21 with Moli Haak's layup with 4:54 left in the half. The Muskies answered with an 9-2 spurt capped by Peyton Madl (Fr.-New Lenox, Ill.) hitting a three-pointer before the Eagles scored the final four points of the half, including a layup by Vivian Guerrero as time expired.

A.T. Bartlett (Jr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) led Lakeland with 19 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Halle Boldt (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Alexis Johnson (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored eight points and chipped in six rebounds. Lauryn Johnson (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) added seven points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Lakeland shot 34.6%, hitting 28 of 81 field goals. The Muskies also tied a season low with 10 turnovers and finished with a 20-4 advantage in fast break points.

Norby finished with 23 points and Guerrero added 21 points plus 14 rebounds for Edgewood, which shot 45.3% (29 of 64). The Eagles also posted a 50-42 rebounding advantage.

Lakeland is on the road again Wednesday when it travels to take on Alverno College in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
