Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Muskies blistering on the attack again in sweep of Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Samya Hughes (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Maleigha Kovalaske (So.-Ripon, Wis.) combined for 28 kills and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team was again superbly efficient on the attack in a three-set sweep of Rockford University Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies dismissed the Regents quickly in a 25-9, 25-18, 25-13 win for their second straight NACC victory. Lakeland improved to 8-13 overall and is now 2-3 in conference after dropping Rockford to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in conference.

The Muskies topped the .400 mark in attack percentage for the second straight match, nearly bettering their showing less than 48 hours earlier against Marian University on Thursday night. After Lakeland posted a .412 mark against the Sabres that was its best in more than 10 years, the Muskies hit at a .404 clip against Rockford with 46 kills and 10 errors in 89 attack attempts.

Hughes totaled 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage and Kovalaske added 12 kills without an error in 19 swings for a .632 hitting percentage. Caitlyn Pernsteiner (Jr.-Arpin, Wis.) also added seven kills and hit .500 while also added four service aces and two solo blocks.

Lakeland played from ahead virtually the entire match, never trailing in the first two sets and only briefly behind in the third. The Muskies' biggest challenge came in the second set, when the Regents hung around for the first half of the set and scored consecutive points to tie at 10-10. Lakeland responded with three consecutive kills coming in order from Hughes, Kovalaske and Pernsteiner as part of a 7-1 run and Rockford never got closer than three the rest of the set.

Sydney Gay (So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) finished with 33 assists from the setter spot and tied for the team lead with six digs. Kenzie Jackson (Fr.-Mansfield, Texas) added five kills and Ryan Figi (Jr.-Hartland, Wis.) contributed six digs.

Amelia Rodriguez and Jalyn Rhodes paced the Regents with five kills each. Rockford posted 20 kills and 15 errors for a .064 hitting percentage. Keara Ross added seven digs and two service aces.

Lakeland is back on the road Thursday to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
