PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Milwaukee School of Engineering scored six times in the first half, including four goals in a stretch of less than 10 minutes late in the half on the way to defeating the Lakeland University women's soccer team 7-0 Wednesday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Rosario Etcheverria Abuin scored three times and the Raiders remained undefeated in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference at 8-0-1 (10-4-2 overall). The Muskies dropped to 1-11-1 overall and 1-8 in the NACC.
MSOE scored its first goal just over four minutes into the match with Faith Papazoglou knocking in a rebound after a shot by Hadleigh Ostrenga. The Raiders scored again in the 10th minute with a goal by Elizabeth Kuhn to make it 2-0.
The Muskies were able to tread water from there for nearly 20 minutes, holding MSOE in check until Etcheverria Abuin scored her first goal of the match in the 30th minute with a shot that ate up goalkeeper
Ingrid Steinbock (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and went in to make it 3-0. Etcheverria Abuin added two more goals and assisted on another, all over a span of 9:21.
Lakeland played better in the second half and would've shut out the Raiders over the final 45 minutes except for misfortune in the 83rd minute, when an attempted header to clear under minimal pressure instead went backwards and looped into the net. The Muskies pressured MSOE at times in the middle portion of the second half and had their best scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute when
Mikayla Belasco (
Jr.-Muskegon, Mich.) took a free kick that rattled around in the box and had Raiders reserve goalkeeper Ayla Zuzek on the ground, but the ball rolled away under pressure from
Malaya Sperber (
So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and
Ines Rodriguez (
Jr.-Newark, Calif.).
Steinbock made six saves in goal in the first half for Lakeland.
Addi Reimer (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) made four saves in the second half.
Emily Guy (
Jr.-Glendale Heights, Ill.) also accounted for a team save for the Muskies, covering the right post and clearing a shot away after an MSOE corner kick.
The Muskies are back on the field at home again Thursday to host Grace Christian (Mich.) University for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
