Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sperber scores again, Lakeland holds rest of the way to top Grace Christian 1-0

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Malaya Sperber (So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored her sixth goal of the season and the Lakeland University women's soccer team made her early goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over Grace Christian (Mich.) University Thursday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.

Sperber scored in the 17th minute and the Muskies led the rest of the way to earn their second win of the season. Lakeland claimed the non-conference match and the second-ever meeting between the schools, improving to 2-11-1 overall this year.

The Muskies cashed in on an attack with Ines Rodriguez (Jr.-Newark, Calif.) making the play from the midfield with a ball ahead through two defenders to Sperber on the right side. The sophomore forward received the pass and got off a shot just before a defender arrived that went under goalkeeper Kenna Hill and in for her fourth goal in three matches and her team-best sixth of the season, with Rodriguez notching her second assist.

Lakeland controlled play from the start and throughout the contest, finishing with a big 23-3 advantage in shot attempts. The Muskies put 13 shots on goal, including eight from Sperber, but were held to the single goal with a number of their shots coming from distance.

The Lakeland defense also regularly shut down any budding Grace Christian (3-7-2 overall) opportunities, with the back line of Emily Guy (Jr.-Glendale Heights, Ill.), Caris Jaeger (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.), Allison Solberg-Kieler (Sr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) and Charmiss Tucker (So.-Kitty Hawk, N.C.) quickly converging to keep the Tigers from attacking. Addi Reimer (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) had to make just one save, coming just 14 seconds before Sperber's goal, on the way to her first collegiate win and shutout.

Lia Armstrong (Jr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) also posted four shots and Tucker and Mikayla Belasco (Jr.-Muskegon, Mich.) added two shots each. Hill made 12 saves in goal for Grace Christian, which played Lakeland to a scoreless tie in the teams' only prior meeting in 2013.

Lakeland is on the road and back in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Saturday when it travels to face Dominican University at noon in River Forest, Ill.
