Muskies dominate Stars in Homecoming volleyball victory

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Maleigha Kovalaske (So.-Ripon, Wis.) piled up 17 kills against Dominican University and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team rolled to a Homecoming win with a three-set sweep Saturday late afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies cruised to a 25-10, 25-21, 25-9 victory, their fourth straight win. Lakeland moved to 10-13 overall and is now 4-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, bouncing back after a difficult early conference schedule that included three of the conference's premier programs.

Kovalaske and Samya Hughes (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) both topped the Stars' team kills total all by themselves. Hughes also posted 15 kills, one more than Dominican's 14 kills in the match, which came as part of a -.069 hitting percentage for the guests with 20 errors in 87 attacks.

The Muskies posted a .305 hitting percentage with 42 kills and 13 errors in 95 swings, and also added seven service aces and seven team blocks. Lakeland in particular dominated in pulling away in the first and third sets, finishing the first set on a 16-2 run and out-pointing the Stars 15-1 to close out the match, including scoring the match's final 10 points.

Dominican (2-15 overall, 1-6 NACC) put up its best challenge in the second set, which included seven ties and two lead changes. The teams seemed to trade points much of the way and were tied as late as 16-16 before the Muskies scored five straight, including three kills by Hughes, a block by Hughes and Faith Baker (So.-Verona, Ill.) and a kill by Caitlyn Pernsteiner (Jr.-Arpin, Wis.).

Kenzie Jackson (Fr.-Mansfield, Texas) also added four kills plus five digs and two blocks from her middle blocker position. Sydney Gay (So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) also totaled 31 assists plus 10 digs.

Ellery Shea led Dominican with seven kills and three service aces. Fabiana Pizza also added a match-high 15 digs.

The Muskies are back home for their next match Thursday when they take on Illinois Tech at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
