RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team ended one streak against Dominican University but just missed halting another in a 2-1 loss Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest.
The Muskies scored a goal on the Stars for the first time in 21 years, ending a streak of 19 straight shutouts against the longtime NACC power. Dominican scored the go-ahead goal in a tie game, though, and defeated Lakeland for the 23rd consecutive time in the teams' all-time series.
The Muskies (5-8-2 overall, 2-6-2 NACC) answered a Stars goal in the 19th minute with their goal just over five minutes later, and in unique fashion. Lakeland's
Omero Cornejo (
Sr.-Carpentersville, Ill.) stole a ball on a Dominican attack and passed ahead to
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.). Dominican goalkeeper Joshua Memmelaar was caught out of goal and Davis-Troller rifled a shot from 55 yards out over the backpedaling Memmelaar and under the crossbar for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The teams were tied at halftime and into the 60th minute when the Stars scored the go-ahead goal. A corner kick rattled around in the box until getting to Nicholas Porada, who had space in the middle and fired a shot inside the right post from 10 yards out for his second goal of the match and what proved to be the game-winner.
Lakeland posted two more shots on goal, one by
Brahm Dell Adema (
Sr.-Plano, Texas) in the 73rd minute and another by Cornejo in the 84th minute on a free kick. Dominican attempted to run out clock in the final minutes, but the Muskies mounted a final attack with two minutes left resulting in a good chance with Davis-Troller hitting a sliding hard shot from 30 yards out that went just high of the goal.
Dominican (5-7-3 overall, 5-3-1 NACC) finished with a 20-7 lead in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) made five saves for Lakeland, while Davis-Troller led the team with three shot attempts.
Lakeland continues a late-season stretch of NACC road games when it travels to face St. Norbert College Wednesday at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
