Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lakeland goes the distance on the road but falls to St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team twice rallied from a set down to tie the match but St. Norbert College used a big run in the final set to outlast the Muskies in five sets Thursday night.

The Muskies again were competitive against a quality team but came up just short in a match going all five sets, dropping to 0-4 in five-set matches this season. Lakeland also fell to 6-12 overall and 0-2 early on the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tour.

The Muskies also dropped to 2-4 this season at what has felt like their second home court much of the season, with Lakeland playing its sixth match at SNC's Mulva Family Fitness Center to only three matches on its own home court so far. The Muskies showed resilience on Thursday, continuing to fight back despite struggles on the attack at times and also tallying a season-best 11 blocks as a team.

Lakeland followed up a slow start with what would be their best hitting of the night, posting a .257 attack percentage with 14 kills and five errors in taking the second set to tie the match at 1-1. The Green Knights (13-4 overall, 4-0 NACC) responded by pulling away late in the third set, but the Muskies returned the favor in the fourth, scoring five of the final six points to send the match to a final set.

Sydney Gay (So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) and Kenzie Jackson (Fr.-Mansfield, Texas) combined for blocks for Lakeland's final two points in the fourth, and the Muskies took a 6-4 lead in the fifth set on another block by Faith Baker (So.-Verona, Ill.) and Caitlyn Pernsteiner (Jr.-Arpin, Wis.). St. Norbert would swing the set, though, by scoring seven straight points, including five errors by Lakeland. The Muskies would get no closer than four points the rest of the way and SNC closed out the match on its third match point.

Samya Hughes (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) posted 15 kills and Maleigha Kovalaske (So.-Ripon, Wis.) added 13 kills to lead the Lakeland attack, but the two also combined for 20 attack errors in an indication of the team's up-and-down efficiency hitting on the night. Baker and Pernsteiner also added nine kills each, and as a team the Muskies hit .114 with 50 kills and 30 errors.

Baker also finished with a career-high seven block assists. Hughes also posted 21 digs, Kovalaske finished with 18 digs and Ryan Figi (Jr.-Hartland, Wis.) also totaled 15 digs. Gay also posted 45 assists from the setter spot.

Mickenzi Benter and Casey Vaughan led St. Norbert with 13 kills each and Kara Sowinski added a match-high 28 digs. The Green Knights hit .167 for the match, posting 57 kills to 27 errors.

Lakeland plays its third straight NACC match against one of the conference's top teams when it hosts Aurora University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
