Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies eliminated from NACC tourney picture, fall to Falcons in conference finale

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Jordan Davis-Troller (Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) added to his season point total with his ninth goal but the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell to Concordia University Wisconsin 4-2 Saturday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.

The Muskies officially saw their hopes for a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament end, closing out their conference schedule with a 2-8-2 mark (5-10-2 overall). Concordia stayed in the chase for the last spot in the eight-team tournament, improving to 3-7-1 in the NACC and 4-10-3 overall.

Lakeland saw its hopes for the NACC tourney effectively extinguished before Saturday night's game when Marian University finished a 4-1 win over Concordia University Chicago. The Muskies also saw their hopes for a victory Saturday night take a huge blow, if not completely ended, by a red card late in the first half that forced Lakeland to play the final 55 minutes a man down.

With the game tied at 1-1 and less than 11 minutes remaining in the first half, a tangle between two players on the field just in front of the Concordia bench resulted in a brief scuffle, with players from both teams briefly converging. Tempers were cooled quickly, but a Lakeland player was ruled to have thrown a punch and was given a red card, leaving the Muskies with just 10 players for the rest of the match.

The game was largely played on even terms for the first 30-plus minutes, but with the advantage the Falcons capitalized quickly. CUW's Lukas Olson scored just over three minutes later, the recipient of a cross from Harris Burgos and giving the visitors the lead.

Concordia added two more goals early in the second half, first with Sam Butterfield heading in a corner kick in the 53rd minute and then again when Huba Hajdu scored in the 60th minute. Lakeland was able to get one goal back in the 72nd minute when Davis-Troller struck a blast from 45 yards out over Falcons goalkeeper Enrique Torres, and the Muskies had several other chances late but could get no closer.

The finish was a disappointing one in a match that was evenly played for much of the first half. Lakeland controlled play most of the first 15 minutes, and the teams traded goals just over a minute apart near the middle of the half.

Concordia opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when Matthew Payne led a quick counter attack, then sent a ball through to Mateo Nabben, who got to it before goalkeeper Matt English (Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) and scored to make it 1-0. The Muskies answered just over a minute later, though, when they were awarded a corner kick and Austin Eigenberger-Vahsholtz (So.-Grafton, Wis.) served in a cross that reached Dunia Wangu (So.-Tanzania), who eventually tapped it in for his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

Wangu also added an assist on Davis-Troller's goal and led Lakeland with five shot attempts. Porter Gigstead (So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also added two shot attempts, both quality chances in the game's early stages. English finished making three saves in goal.

Lakeland closes its season with a pair of non-conference games, first traveling to take on Maranatha Baptist University Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Watertown before hosting Ripon College Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
