Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lakeland tops Maranatha Baptist 1-0 on Wangu goal, English shutout

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Dunia Wangu (So.-Tanzania) scored the match's lone goal and Matt English (Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) notched his second shutout of the season as the Lakeland University men's soccer team edged Maranatha Baptist University 1-0 Tuesday afternoon.

The Muskies defeated the Sabercats in the first of two end-of-season non-conference games to close out their campaign and earn their sixth win of the season. Lakeland is now 6-10-2 overall, with the six wins tied with the 2014 and 2021 teams for the most by the program since winning eight games in 2013.

The Muskies dodged some bullets early and won an evenly played game against a stubborn Maranatha team (7-5-2 overall) that is just outside the top 10 in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II poll.

Lakeland broke the ice in a scoreless game in the 69th minute with a lightning-quick transition after clearing a Maranatha corner kick. Omero Cornejo (Sr.-Carpentersville, Ill.) and then Justin Cain (So.-Houston, Texas) started the ball forward to Owen Bishop (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.), who then from just before midfield chipped the ball ahead over Wangu and two defenders. Sabercats goalkeeper Joe Shank converged but Wangu beat all three MBU players to the ball and chipped it over Shank's head and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

The Muskies would hang on from there, not attempting another shot in the game while Maranatha Baptist posted four shots in the final 15 minutes. English made saves on all three shots on goal, and Lakeland held the hosts without a shot in the final 9:24 to finish off the win.

English finished making eight saves, including five in the first half. The Muskies posted a slim 10-9 edge in shot attempts, though the Sabercats held an 11-5 lead in corner kicks.

Lakeland wraps up its season Wednesday night when it hosts Ripon College for a non-conference game at John Taylor Memorial Field at 7 p.m.
