Maleigha Kovalaske (
So.-Ripon, Wis.) finished with 15 kills and six service aces and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team continued to roll with a four-set win at Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Muskies dropped the first set before coming back for a 21-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 win. Lakeland won its seventh straight match and with an NACC Tournament spot already clinched continued its march towards a possible home match in the first round of the tournament, improving to 13-13 overall and 7-3 in conference.
The Muskies won by playing the cleaner match of the two teams, especially on the attack. Lakeland hit .219 as a team with 39 kills and 14 errors, but while WLC (11-13 overall, 7-3 NACC) posted 53 kills, the Warriors also piled up a hefty 30 attack errors in hitting .149 for the match.
Lutheran hit .448 in a well-played first set by both teams, and also streaked out to a 7-2 lead early in the second set before the Muskies hit their stride. Lakeland outscored WLC 11-4 to take a 13-11 lead after a block by
Sydney Gay (
So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) and
Kenzie Jackson (
Fr.-Mansfield, Texas), their second combined block in three points. Lakeland never trailed again in the set, and then dominated the second half of the third set to go ahead 2-1 in the match.
Wisconsin Lutheran built a 9-6 lead early in the fourth set, but Lakeland again heated up later in the set. The Muskies went ahead with four straight points to take an 18-15 lead, including a pair of kills by
Faith Baker (
So.-Verona, Ill.), and needed just two more kills and an ace the rest of the way with WLC contributing two attack errors and two service errors.
Samya Hughes (
Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) followed Kovalaske with 14 kills, with the duo combining for 29 of Lakeland's 39 kills.
Ryan Figi (
Jr.-Hartland, Wis.) also finished with 14 digs and four service aces and
Katelyn Kitsembel (
Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) added 11 digs. Gay also posted 34 assists and five blocks (one solo, four assisted).
Kayla Wigley led Wisconsin Lutheran with 16 kills and Lydia Biggin added 15 kills.
The Muskies now get ready for Senior Day Saturday against Benedictine University at noon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
