PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Mateo Secaira scored the go-ahead goal for Illinois Institute of Technology in the 75th minute and the Lakeland University men's soccer team came up just short in a 2-1 loss Wednesday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.
The Muskies led for more than 30 minutes of the game but Illinois Tech scored twice in the second half in a span of less than eight minutes for the come-from-behind win. Lakeland dropped to 4-6-2 overall and is 1-4-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Secaira capitalized on a Lakeland miscue on the back line to score what proved to be the winning goal. He pounced on a misplay by the Muskies defense, and with a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) scored for his ninth goal of the season, second-most in the NACC.
IIT (6-5-2 overall, 3-3-1 NACC) scored its first goal by taking advantage of a failed clear of a crossing pass. A header attempted to clear the ball out went to Adam Lazarowicz, who hit a bouncing shot with his left foot that snuck just inside the right post to tie the game 1-1 at 66:40 of the match.
Lakeland was the better team for a good share of the match's first 60 minutes, including scoring the game's first goal in the 37th minute.
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) sent a ball ahead and through to
Dunia Wangu (
So.-Tanzania) on the run, and Wangu got to it and beat IIT goalkeeper Colin Thomas for his third goal of the season and making it 1-0. Incredibly, the goal was the Muskies' first in the first half of a game this season, with all 15 of the team's goals coming in having come in the second half of games.
Lakeland also had several chances early in the second half, with
Porter Gigstead (
So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and
Roman Riggs (
Fr.-North Liberty, Iowa) both with shots off target and Riggs with the best chance in the 64th minute. A free kick by
Austin Eigenberger-Vahsholtz (So.-Grafton, Wis.) bounced around in the box before getting to Riggs, whose blast from 15 yards out aimed inside the right post was knocked down by Thomas.
Wangu finished with four shot attempts while English made six saves in goal. Thomas stopped two shots for IIT, which outshot Lakeland 21-8, including 14-5 in the second half.
The Muskies are home again Saturday for their Senior Day against Rockford University at 5:30 p.m.
