Michael named top offensive skill player, leads Lakeland all-NACC football selections

Senior quarterback Robby Michael (Sheboygan, Wis.) was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's Offensive Skill Position Player of the Year, leading a group of 10 selections for conference honors when the NACC released its postseason football awards Thursday afternoon.

Michael joined defensive backs Zelmarious Banks (Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Markese Collins (Sr.-Phenix City, Ala.) as first team all-conference selection. Receiving second team honors were Deshawn Hampton (Jr.-Hazel Crest, Ill.), Kenyon Peoples (Jr.-Lansing, Ill.), Vyron Rosquist-Wallace (Sr.-Henderson, Nev.) and Shamond Oliver (Sr.-Phenix City, Ala.).

Three more received honorable mention recognition: Caden Kleparski (So.-Colby, Wis.), Orion Cairo (So.-El Paso, Texas) and Trayvonne Roberts (Jr.-Lynwood, Ill.). The ten Muskies recognized come after a year when Lakeland finished 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the NACC.

Michael was named a first team selection for the second straight year and is the first Muskie to receive an offensive player of the year award since Michael Whitley was a three-time winner from 2015-17. He finished a terrific career receiving NACC honors all four years, including honorable mention as a freshman and sophomore and being named Freshman of the Year in 2022.

Michael had what was in many ways his best year yet as a senior. He completed 216 of 396 passes for 2,909 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while also rushing 225 times for 797 yards and 11 touchdowns. He led the NACC in passing yards and total offense, was second in passing touchdowns and fourth in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Michael also ranked among the NCAA Division III leaders in a number of categories all season, and closed the regular season third nationally in total offense (370.6 yards per game). He also is eighth in total points responsible for (216), ninth in points responsible for/game (21.6) and 11th in total passing yards and passing yards/game (290.9).

Banks made a fast rise from reserve to one of the best cornerbacks in the NACC in his first season. He took over as a starter in the second game and went on to intercept seven passes, leading the conference and tied for second nationally in Division III.

Included in his season was a record-setting game against Concordia Chicago Nov. 1, when Banks intercepted three passes, returning two for touchdowns of 55 and then 100 yards. His 175 yards in interception return yards in the game set a new D-III single-game record, breaking a mark set more than 42 years earlier.

Collins closed out a strong four-year career in the Muskies' secondary with his first-ever NACC postseason honors. The safety started all 10 games and made 42 tackles (30 solo, 12 assisted), including five tackles for loss.

Collins also intercepted four passes, tied for second-best in the conference, and broke up four more passes. He finished his career with eight total interceptions as a three-year starter.

Hampton leads four Lakeland players receiving second team honors after an explosive year as a wide receiver. The junior caught 32 passes for 607 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 19.0 yards per catch.

In a talented Lakeland receivers group, Hampton tied for third on the team in catches but led the team in receiving touchdowns and yards per reception and also was second in receiving yards. He finished tied for third in the NACC in touchdown receptions, third among regulars in yards/catch and seventh in the conference in receiving yards.

Peoples and Rosquist-Wallace anchored the Muskies defensive line and both received all-conference honors for the first time in their careers.

Peoples finished with 49 tackles (30 solo, 19 assisted) and led the team with 12 tackles for loss and was second with 4.5 sacks. He also tied for sixth in the NACC in TFLs and ranked tied for ninth in the conference in sacks.

Rosquist-Wallace started all 10 games and helped plug the middle in the Lakeland defensive front, finishing with 45 tackles (27 solo, 18 assisted). He also added 7.5 tackles for loss, tied for third-best on the team, including 1.5 sacks and one fumble recovery.

Oliver was tabbed for all-NACC recognition for the second time in his career after being named honorable mention as a sophomore. The safety started all 10 games and paced Lakeland with 70 tackles (46 solo, 24 assisted) including four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes broken up. He also ranks eighth in the NACC in total tackles.

Kleparski emerged as one of the Muskies' top receivers in his sophomore year, finishing with 43 catches for 625 yards and five touchdowns. He led Lakeland in receptions and receiving yards and was third in touchdown catches, and also was fourth in the NACC in catches and sixth in the conference in receiving yards.

Cairo was one of the anchors on the Lakeland offensive line, taking over at the center spot and starting all 10 games. He was part of an offense that ranks 11th nationally in Division III in total offense (491.8 ypg) and is in the top 50 in the country in passing offense (18th, 299.2 ypg), rushing offense (45th, 192.6 ypg) and scoring (48th, 35.3 points per game).

Roberts joined Banks, Collins and Oliver as part of a strong secondary that ended up ranking especially strong in pass defense, leading the NACC and ranking 33rd in Division III in passing yards allowed/game (163.7). He finished second on the team with 68 tackles (42 solo, 26 assisted), 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two passes broken up. Roberts also led the conference and is tied for the lead nationally in D-III with four fumble recoveries for the season.
