PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Levi Everts (
Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) and
Ben Busalacchi (
Sr.-Muskego, Wis.) both had big matches and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team finished with a flourish to complete a four-set win over Westminster (Mo.) College Friday evening at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies closed out a 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 win over the Bluejays in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Lakeland finishes its non-conference schedule with a 6-6 record heading into its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener Sunday at home against Illinois Institute of Technology.
The Muskies largely outplayed a Westminster program in its first year of play that has already had a strong debut season. That included a three-set sweep of St. Norbert College (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) in the night's first match for the Blue Jays' 10th win of the season.
Lakeland pulled away to win the first set and led the second set almost the entire way, though Westminster (10-10 overall) hung around and was within two points on a number of occasions late before
Jakob Donohue (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) closed it out with authority with a kill on set point to put the Muskies up 2-0 in the match.
Westminster stayed in the match by winning a third set that included 12 ties and six lead changes, and the teams appeared ready to go down to the wire in the fourth set when the Blue Jays earned a side out to get within 14-13. The Muskies would close the match on an 11-2 run, though, with Everts, Busalacchi and
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) dominating the finish. Everts and Davis-Troller both served aces and Busalacchi notched kills on six of the final nine points, including a number of times at the net putting away overpasses after strong serves by both Everts and Davis-Troller.
Everts finished with 12 kills plus 14 digs, two service aces and three blocks (one solo, two assisted) and Busalacchi posted a match-high 17 kills plus eight digs and four blocks (three solo, one assisted). The two keyed an attack hitting at a .281 rate with 49 kills and 17 errors.
Sage Xiong (
Fr.-Erie, Colo.) also finished with eight kills plus 13 digs and Donohue posted five kills plus three blocks (one solo, two assisted). Davis-Troller also added four kills, two aces and four blocks (one solo, three assisted) as Lakeland finished with a season-high 11 blocks.
Derrick Turner paced Westminster with 13 kills and Aidan Ortmann added 11 kills. The Blue Jays hit .117 as a team with 40 kills and 24 errors, including a combined .011 over the first, second and fourth sets.
Lakeland hosts Illinois Tech on Sunday for a 2 p.m. start at the Woltzen Gym.
