PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's basketball team shot 62.9% in the second half and rallied for a Senior Day win, defeating Dominican University 88-78 Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Asanjai Hunter (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) and
Isaiah Hammond (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) both posted double-doubles and the Muskies completed a sweep of the Stars this season while earning a key Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win. Lakeland moved into a three-way tie for eighth in the conference standings at 6-8 with four games left in the regular season, important because the top eight teams in the final standings qualifying for the NACC Tournament.
The Muskies (7-14 overall) trailed much of the first half and went into halftime down 36-33 after Dominican (7-14 overall, 4-10 NACC) forced 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Lakeland would catch and pass the Stars soon in the second half, though, scoring with ease while making 22 of 35 shots.
Many of the Muskies' points came on layups, with 38 points scored in the paint in the second half. That included most of a stretch of seven straight made shots early in the half, six of them layups and the seventh a three-pointer from
Peyton Mrotek (
Jr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) that put Lakeland ahead 50-49 with 14 minutes, 43 seconds left in the game.
The Muskies never trailed again and continued the run, in all scoring 13 straight points with Hunter's tip-in after a miss making it 56-49 with 12:16 left. Lakeland eventually went ahead by nine at 69-60 after a three-pointer by
Emmitt Konieczny (
Fr.-Marshfield, Wis.) before the Stars rallied back, closing within 73-72 after a short jumper by Robbie Taylor with 3:00 left.
The Muskies went back ahead by three with another layup by Hunter the next time down, and Dominican never got closer the rest of the way. Lakeland hit five of six free throws in the final 1:32 to close the game.
The Muskies finished shooting 53.8% for the game, hitting 35 of 65 shots. Lakeland also outrebounded the Stars 39-36 and defeated Dominican for the second time in two months, having also won a 96-93 decision in overtime on the road in River Forest, Ill., Dec. 7.
Hunter finished with 24 points, including 20 points in the second half, plus 10 rebounds. Hammond added 16 points plus 11 rebounds and fellow senior
Cliff McCray (
Madison, Wis.) also finished with 15 points.
Adrian Pelszynski led Dominican with a career-high 24 points off the bench, including hitting 6 of 9 from three-point range. Terrell Taylor added 16 points off the bench and the Stars finished shooting 42.3%, making 30 of 71 shots.
The Muskies are home again Wednesday when they face St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
