Series history:Â 6th meeting, Lakeland leads 3-2
The series between the Muskies and Regents dates back to 2021, Rockford's first year with a varsity program. The series has been close throughout, including a pair of five-set matches, one coming last year when Lakeland held on for an 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-5 win at Rockford just under a year ago on March 23, 2024. The Regents' last win in the series was a three-set sweep at home March 8, 2023, and Rockford also won the first-ever meeting in four sets on its home court March 16, 2021. This is just the third time the teams have met at Lakeland, with the Muskies winning meetings at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium in 2022 and 2023.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at #10 Aurora 3-0 Thursday
The Muskies fell to a nationally ranked opponent for the fourth time this season with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 loss to the Spartans, ranked 10th in the latest AVCA NCAA Division III Top 20 Coaches Poll. Lakeland played for the first time in nine days but never led in the first two sets and saw a late rally in the third set fall short in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. The Muskies trailed by five in the third set but went on a 9-3 run to take an 18-17 lead, but Aurora responded with five of the next six points and led the rest of the way.
Jordan Davis-Troller and
Eli Weinrich led Lakeland with six kills each, Weinrich added a team-high eight digs and
Joe Bieganski posted two service aces.
Rockford last time out: Lost at Edgewood 3-0 Thursday
The Regents also were defeated in a sweep Thursday night, dropping a 25-13, 26-24, 25-13 decision to the Eagles in Madison. Rockford's best chance at taking a set came in the second when it scored our straight points late to get to set point at 24-23, but Edgewood came back with the final three points to win the set. Isaiah Dixon led the Regents with 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, recording nearly half of their team total of 23 kills. Dixon also added three service aces and Josh Albers led Rockford with nine digs and 10 assists.
About the Regents: Rockford enters with a winless 0-8 mark in the NACC, but the Regents have actually won three of their last five matches coming into Saturday. The Regents defeated Simpson (Iowa) at a triangular hosted by Westminster (Mo.) last Saturday, and also defeated both Greenville (Ill.) and Franklin (Ind.) at a triangular hosted by Greenville last Thursday. Lakeland holds a slight edge over Rockford in conference play, with the Muskies having won five sets in NACC matches, coming over five different matches all 3-1 losses, while the Regents have won two sets in conference play, including one in a 3-1 loss to Benedictine on March 11.
