Jurney elevated to full-time assistant for Lakeland men’s and women’s volleyball programs

Jake Jurney has been named assistant coach for the Lakeland University men's and women's volleyball programs, Head Women's Volleyball Coach Ryan Schopf and Head Men's Volleyball Coach Brian Rushmer have announced.

Jurney will join the Lakeland Athletics staff in a full-time role split between the two teams, the first time the teams have had a position devoted fully to assisting the programs. He previously was a part-time assistant coach with the Muskies' men's volleyball team the past two years, where he assisted Rushmer while also teaching full-time and coaching the girls volleyball team at Plymouth High School.

Jurney has six years of coaching experience and came to the Muskies in the 2022-23 school year already with four years of experience coaching at the high school and club levels, and also played in high school for Rushmer.

He also played four years collegiately at Lakeland's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival Marian University, appearing in 74 matches in his career and posting 361 kills, 324 digs, 64 service aces and 60 blocks over four years. His career highlights included being named an honorable mention all-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference selection as a junior.

Jurney is a native of Germantown, Wis., and a graduate of Germantown High School, where he participated in volleyball, basketball and golf. He also played club volleyball with Rushmer among his coaches for Milwaukee Volleyball Club. He completed his degree from Marian in secondary education and was a social studies teacher at Plymouth High School after his graduation from Marian.
