Pointers tip Muskies 2-0 in men’s soccer season opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point sandwiched a pair of goals around the halftime break and defeated the Lakeland University men's soccer team 2-0 in both teams' season opener Friday night.

The Pointers defeated the Muskies by a 2-0 count for the second straight year, this time in what was also the second-ever meeting between the programs. UW-Stevens Point also defeated Lakeland last season on the Muskies' home field.

UWSP held a large advantage in the match in attacking, outshooting the Muskies 24-2. That included an 11-0 margin in the first half, though Lakeland was able to keep the Pointers off the board until Vincent Bianco scored unassisted at 37 minutes, 34 seconds of the match for a 1-0 lead.

UW-Stevens Point then added a second goal just 2:20 into the second half. Devin Wilkerson scored with an assist from Connor Urban, the goal giving the Pointers two goals in less than 10 minutes and a two-goal lead that would hold the rest of the way.

The Muskies' lone recorded shot attempts came in the second half, the first when freshman Roman Riggs (North Liberty, Iowa) fired wide right of the goal in the 65th minute. Fellow freshman Chris Ledesma (Georgetown, Texas) also had a shot blocked in the 84th minute.

Andrew Davison (Jr.-Elburn, Ill.) started in goal and made three saves in the full 90 minutes. Davison was joined by Ledesma, Riggs, Justin Cain (So.-Houston, Texas), Eduardo Campuzano (Sr.-Hinckley, Ill.) and Jordan Davis-Troller (Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) as Muskies playing all 90 minutes.

Wilkerson (five shot attempts) and Urban (four shots) led the UWSP attack. The Pointers outshot Lakeland significantly in the game but put just six of their 24 shots on goal.

Lakeland is on the road again Tuesday when it faces Cornell (Iowa) College for a 4 p.m. start in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
