MOUNT VERNON, Iowa –
Owen Bishop (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) made his first collegiate goal a big one, scoring the go-ahead tally as the Lakeland University men's soccer team came back for a 2-1 win at Cornell (Iowa) College Tuesday evening.
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) also scored a goal and assisted on the eventual winner as the Muskies rallied from a brief 1-0 deficit in the second half. Lakeland also won the first-ever meeting between the programs and won in the state of Iowa for the first time since a 2-0 win at Iowa Wesleyan in 2016.
Bishop scored the winning goal with 7 minutes, 7 seconds left in the match as the Muskies quickly took advantage of a good defensive play. Cornell (0-2 overall) attempted to send a pass ahead but
Justin Cain (
So.-Houston, Texas) challenged and beat the offensive player to the ball, sending ahead to Davis-Troller in the center circle. Bishop then broke down the right side and Davis-Troller played the ball ahead to him, and the freshman after three touches beat goalkeeper Jack Massey from 12 yards out for his first goal.
Cain also had a hand in the first Lakeland goal, winning a goal kick from Massey with a header to send the ball back into the Muskies' offensive end.
Roman Riggs (
Fr.-North Liberty, Iowa) eventually sent a pass ahead that was initially deflected by a Cornell defender, but Davis-Troller got to the loose ball and punched it in for his first goal of the season.
Davis-Troller's goal came just 98 seconds after the Rams scored the game's first goal. Javier Andrade-Martinez tallied at 62:00 of the match with an assist by Kyriacos Photiou to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Cornell finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots including a 9-4 lead in shots on goal. Davis-Troller (four shots) and Riggs (three shots) led the Muskies' attacking with
Austin Eigenberger (
So.-Grafton, Wis.) adding two shot attempts.
Andrew Davison (
Jr.-Elburn, Ill.) made the start in goal and saved five shots in the first half.
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) came on in the second half and allowed a goal but made three saves to earn the win.
Lakeland now gets ready for its home opener on Friday when it faces Hamline (Minn.) University for a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
