Samya Hughes (
Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) delivered 15 kills to cap a strong first two days of her collegiate career and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team swept Gallaudet University in three close sets to finish play at the Chick-fil-A Invitational hosted by St. Norbert College.
The Muskies edged the Bison 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 to cap the season-opening tourney hosted by their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival. Lakeland finished 2-1 on its opening weekend, also defeating Lawrence University while falling to College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Friday.
Hughes totaled 15 kills with four errors in 34 attacks for a .324 hitting percentage on Saturday. She added six digs and two service aces, and was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Muskies with 40 kills and 52 digs over the three matches.
Rylee Esquibel (
So.-Devine, Texas) and
Maleigha Kovalaske (
So.-Ripon, Wis.) also both added eight kills each and
Faith Baker (
So.-Verona, Ill.) finished with four kills plus six blocks (four solo, two assisted) and two service aces.
Sydney Gay (
So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) added 35 assists,
Ryan Figi (
Jr.-Hartland, Wis.) paced the team with 16 digs and
Katelyn Kitsembel (
Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) added a team-best three service aces.
Brielle Worley led Gallaudet with a match-high 22 kills. The Bison came from Washington D.C. for the tourney and finished 2-2 over the two days.
The Muskies are in De Pere again Tuesday when they play a pair of matches against strong in-state foes. Lakeland faces the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 5 p.m., with the Titans entering ranked No. 6 in the AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Muskies then will take on UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m., with the Pointers just outside the top 25 poll in the preseason.
