Lawrence tops Lakeland in women’s soccer opener

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – A strong and experienced Lawrence University team controlled play while the Lakeland University women's soccer team had a tough opening day in falling 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field.

A beautiful Labor Day weekend Sunday afternoon was one of the highlights for the Muskies in their season opener against a Lawrence team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament last year. Lakeland finished without a shot while the Vikings improved to 1-0-1 overall on the season, having tied the Muskies' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival Concordia University Wisconsin 2-2 in their season debut Friday.

Lawrence finished with a 21-0 advantage in shots and a big lead in possession, but Lakeland was ultimately done in by fouls and missed clears in front of its goal. The Vikings scored four of their five goals off corner kicks and penalty kicks, including two goals directly off corners.

Lawrence got on the board in the 25th minute when Ava Elders was in the right place in front of the goal for an easy put away off a rebound after Ingrid Steinbock (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) stopped an initial shot by Kate Noonan. The Vikings then added two goals late in the first half, the first when Sieanna Sandor headed in a corner kick from Noonan, the second when Steinbock stopped Elders on a penalty kick, but Elders again got to the rebound and scored to make it 3-0 in the 43rd minute.

Lawrence added two more goals just over six minutes apart in the second half, the first when Noonan knocked in a corner kick in the 60th minute to make it 4-0. The Vikings wrapped up the scoring when Noonan converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute.

Addi Reimer (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) came on in goal in the second half and made four saves. The Muskies featured seven players making their first collegiate start, with only Steinbock, midfielder Lia Armstrong (Jr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.), forward Malaya Sperber (So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and defender Allison Solberg-Kieler (Sr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) with starting experience entering the game.

Lakeland is on the road for its next game Wednesday when it faces Ripon College at 7 p.m. in Ripon, Wis.
