Muskies scratch out 1-1 women’s soccer tie against Red Hawks

RIPON, Wis. – Malaya Sperber (So.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored an early goal and the Lakeland University women's soccer team played Ripon College to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night in a non-conference match at Hopp Stadium.

The Muskies weathered a considerable disadvantage in shot attempts and bounced back from an opening loss Tuesday to earn their first tie of the season. Lakeland also snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Red Hawks that dated back 15 years, since a 2-1 Muskies win at Ripon Sept. 30, 2009.

Lakeland got on the board less than two minutes into the match when Sperber scored her first goal of the season 1 minute, 41 seconds in. That score held up until the 39th minute, when Ripon (0-2-1 overall) scored on a penalty kick by Juliana Garcia to tie the game.

The Red Hawks outshot the Muskies 6-2 in the first half, and the hosts' advantage was even bigger in the second half. Ripon posted a 13-1 bulge in shot attempts in the second half, but Addi Reimer (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) made eight saves after coming on in goal in the second 45 minutes.

Ingrid Steinbock (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also made four saves in the first half. Sperber and Charmiss Tucker (So.-Kitty Hawk, N.C.) registered the lone shots on goal for Lakeland and Ashlyn Jimenez (Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) also added a shot attempt.

Lakeland has a homestand this weekend with back-to-back games at home Saturday and Sunday. The Muskies host Monmouth (Ill.) College at noon on Saturday and then come back to host Martin Luther (Minn.) College on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
