PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Trailing early in the second half, the Lakeland University men's soccer team turned the game around with an offensive blitz and defeated Lawrence University 4-1 Wednesday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) scored two more goals and added an assist,
Chris Ledesma (
Fr.-Georgetown, Texas) and
Dunia Wangu (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) both scored their first goals of the season and the Muskies topped the Vikings for the first time in 11 years in improving to 3-2 overall. Lakeland also has three wins in its first five games for the first time since 2018 and just the third time in the last 16 years.
Davis-Troller continued his red-hot play and the rest of the Muskies joined him as a sleepy first half turned into a frenetic and wild second half. Lakeland outshot Lawrence (0-3-2 overall) 8-3 in the final 45 minutes and had one offensive chance after another, regularly pushing the ball downfield quickly and answering the Vikings' first goal with three goals in a span of less than 12 minutes soon after.
Davis-Troller scored first, cashing in on the second of consecutive free kicks to tie the score at 1-1 at 53:13 of the match. He scored a goal in his fourth straight match, the first Muskie to score in four straight matches since Kevin Fitchett and Ryan Malo both accomplished the feat in 2008.
The senior then converted a penalty kick just over four minutes later, after
Roman Riggs (
Fr.-North Liberty, Iowa) dribbled through three defenders into an offensive opportunity and then was taken down in the box, resulting in the Muskies' first PK of the season.
Lakeland struck again just over seven minutes later, with Davis-Troller this time again in transition making the feed to Ledesma, who buried a shot from the left for his first collegiate goal. The Muskies kept the pressure on, tilting the field heavily in their favor as the half went on, and later added another goal when goalkeeper
Andrew Davison (
Jr.-Elburn, Ill.) punted long past midfield down the left side and Wangu chased it down. He took on a defender one-on-one before bending a shot past Lawrence goalkeeper Nason Lancina and inside the right post to score in his first game of the season.
Lakeland took off in the second half after a first half that featured few good opportunities for either team. The Muskies had no shots on goal in the first 45 minutes and Lawrence had just two in a scoreless first half that appeared to portend a low-scoring finish where goals would be at a premium. The Vikings would then be the first team on the board early in the second half when Chuck Schlichtmann and Eamon Rougvie executed a numbers advantage with Rougvie scoring off a pass from Schlichtmann in the 50th minute.
Lakeland is off this weekend and returns to play next Wednesday when it hosts Edgewood College at 7 p.m. to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
