Series history: Lakeland and Marian have been meeting in men's soccer regularly since 1983, first as combatants in the Lake Michigan Conference and now in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Complete series records are unavailable, but the Sabres hold a 30-11-5 lead in the series since 1987. The teams have played to 2-2 ties the last two years, including last year Oct. 23, 2024 at Marian's home in Fond du Lac.
Dunia Wangu scored the tying goal in the 58th minute, just 34 seconds after the Sabres' Micah Boyer gave his team a 2-1 lead. The teams also tied in their last meeting at Taylor Field. The last win in the series came for Marian, a 4-1 win in 2022, while Lakeland's last win in the series was 3-1 victory at home in 2023. Marian won what is believed to be the first ever meeting between the schools in 1983, posting a 3-0 win on Sept. 20, 1983.
Lakeland last time out: Tied at Benedictine 1-1 Saturday
Porter Gigstead scored a goal early in the first half, redirecting
Jordan Davis-Troller's shot to open the scoring, and the Muskies played the Eagles to a draw on the road in Lisle, Ill. Gigstead scored in his return to play for the first time since the season opener, and Davis-Troller added his third assist of the season in addition to six goals in continuing to lead the NACC in points this year. The tie also snapped a Lakeland 12-game losing streak to Benedictine that dated back to 2012.
Marian last time out: Lost at Dominican 2-1 Saturday
The Sabres also were in the Chicagoland area on Saturday and played a close match, falling to the Stars in River Forest, Ill. Marian scored first early in the second half with a goal by Vince Sanchez, but Dominican tied the score less than three minutes later and took the lead with 8:17 left in the match. The Stars posted a 16-8 advantage in shots but put just six shots on goal, with Sabres keeper Tyler Hall stopping four shots. Marian also lost to St. Norbert in its NACC opener last Wednesday and has lost three straight games after a 2-1-1 start to the season.
