Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sabres score early, shut down Muskies 2-0

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – An early goal shortly after a throw-in put Marian University ahead and the Lakeland University men's soccer team was defeated 2-0 Wednesday night at John Taylor Memorial Field in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

The Sabres scored in the 26th minute, packed in the defense in the second half, and the Muskies were unable to break through. Lakeland dropped to 3-4-1 overall on the season and is 0-2-1 in the NACC.

Marian (3-4-1 overall, 1-2 NACC) scored the game's first goal just past the midway point of the first half. Vince Sanchez's throw-in from the left sideline went to Jay Wolcott, who quickly passed to Szymon Kielar. Kieler then buried a shot inside the left post from 20 yards out for his first goal of the season and after having just come off the bench less than two minutes earlier.

The Sabres carried the 1-0 lead into halftime and nearly doubled the margin 94 seconds into the second half when Brayden Johnson got behind goalkeeper Andrew Davison (Jr.-Elburn, Ill.) out of goal and had a shot, but Cody Vojta (Fr.-Saint Germain, Wis.) recovered to block the shot and keep the Muskies within a goal.

The Muskies had two quality chances early in the second half, the first coming eight minutes in when Vojta had a run at a free kick by Andrew DeJaynes (So.-Springfield, Ill.) but Marian goalkeeper Tyler Hall made the save. The second came a minute later when Dunia Wangu (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) got to a ball through from Jordan Davis-Troller (Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) straight in front of goal but crushed his shot right into the stomach of Hall.

Lakeland held possession much of the second half, but Marian regularly played nine defenders deep in the final 30 minutes and the Muskies struggled to get close to the Sabres' goal chances were few and far between. Lakeland posted just one shot on goal in the final 35 minutes.

The Muskies' final chance came with just over a minute left with a corner kick, but Marian's Brayden Johnson intercepted a pass and on a breakaway was one-on-one with Davison. The Lakeland goalkeeper stopped him initially, but J.T. Sus scored soon after to put the game away.

Davis-Troller and Austin Eigenberger-Vahsholtz (So.-Grafton, Wis.) led the Muskies with three shot attempts each. Davison made two saves, while Marian's Hall stopped six shots for the shutout.

Lakeland is home again on Saturday when it faces Concordia University Chicago at 3 p.m. at Taylor Field.
