PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Dunia Wangu (
So.-Tanzania) scored the go-ahead goal in the second half, part of a huge finish by the Lakeland University men's soccer team in a 5-2 victory over Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
The Muskies scored five times in all in the final 45 minutes, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win going away for their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory of the season. Five different players scored goals, including three tallying their first collegiate goals, and Lakeland matched its win total for all of last season, improving to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NACC.
The Muskies peppered the Cougars all game long, outshooting CUC 26-10, including 13-5 in both halves. Despite a big advantage in the first half, though, Lakeland trailed 1-0 at halftime and went down two goals just over a minute into the second half on a goal by Giovanni Lechuga.
Lakeland wasted absolutely no time mounting its comeback, though, scoring just 16 seconds later. The Muskies played the ball back after the kickoff, then defender
Omero Cornejo (
Sr.-Carpentersville, Ill.) sent a ball long down the middle of the field that bounced once, then was headed by
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) to
Porter Gigstead (
So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) on the run, and Gigstead scored with a shot from a sharp angle across inside the left post.
Lakeland then tied the game in the 62nd minute with another high-flying play, with
Eduardo Campuzano (
Sr.-Hinckley, Ill.) striking a long cross from the left corner that freshman
Warner Beyer (
Shawano, Wis.) headed on a full run inside the right post for his first collegiate goal. The Muskies took the lead in the 68th minute, with
Justin Cain (
So.-Houston, Texas) dropping a pass to Wangu, who briefly hesitated and then beat goalkeeper Kyle Schultz to make it 3-2.
Lakeland scored again less than four minutes later, with Gigstead doing the initial work to take the ball away at midfield, then passing ahead to Wangu. The sophomore then dropped a pass back to
Aaron Priester (
So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.), whose well-placed shot on the ground got just past Schultz and inside the left post for his first career goal.
The Muskies added one more insurance goal with just over two minutes left, with Davis-Troller causing a turnover in the offensive end allowing
Diego Flores (
Fr.-Delavan, Wis.) to get to a loose ball. Flores then found
Bowen Kettner (
Fr.-Huntley, Ill.), who cashed in for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Gigstead and Wangu both totaled a goal and an assist each and Davis-Troller finished with two assists. Wangu posted eight shots for Lakeland and eleven different players attempted at least one shot.
Matt English (Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) came on in goal in the second half and made one save in earning the win.
Andrew Davison (
Jr.-Elburn, Ill.) also made one save in the first half and
Jeremiah Reynolds (
Fr.-Huntley, Ill.) finished the game's final 1:06.
Schultz made 11 saves for Concordia, which dropped to 1-8-1 overall and 0-4 NACC. Lakeland improved to 4-0-1 in its last five meetings with the Cougars.
The Muskies go on the road for their next match Wednesday against Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
