Box Score 1 PLYMOUTH, Wis. - Anna Kramer scored for Martin Luther (Minn.) College in the 58th minute to break the ice in a scoreless game and the Lakeland University women's soccer team lost a second straight close game this weekend at home with a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
The Muskies dropped their second non-conference game in two days after also falling to Monmouth (Ill.) College 3-2 on Sunday. Lakeland is 0-3-1 overall on the season and now has a 10-day break before opening Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Sept. 17 at Edgewood College.
Kramer got behind the defense on three occasions early in the second half, though the Muskies were able to recover each time. A fourth attempt though would be the difference maker after a through pass by Priscilla Boehm got to Kramer on the run, and she dribbled into a one-on-one with Muskies goalkeeper
Ingrid Steinbock (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) before scoring just inside the right post.
Lakeland would attempt a second half rush similar to the one it put together the day before when it nearly came back from two goals down against Monmouth, but Martin Luther (3-2 overall) would continue to control play most of the final 45 minutes. The Muskies' only good opportunity in the final 30 minutes came in the 77th minute, when
Malaya Sperber (
So.-Grafton, Wis.) carried the ball into the offensive end with speed and fired a shot from 20 yards out that was saved by Knights keeper Maria Vik.
Play was much more even in the first half and Lakeland even held the edge at times. Sperber,
Ashlyn Jimenez (
Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) and
Charmiss Tucker (
So.-Kitty Hawk, N.C.) all had shots on goal in the first 10 minutes
Addi Reimer (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) made four saves in goal in the first half. Steinbock played the second 45 minutes and made three saves. Vik made five saves in earning the shutout for MLC.
The Muskies also struggled offensively in the first half of Saturday's match against Monmouth before warming up and nearly rallying from a 2-0 halftime deficit.
Lia Armstrong (
Jr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored her first goal of the season in the 60th minute after an assist from
Ines Rodriguez (
Jr.-Newark, Calif.) to make it 2-1.
The Fighting Scots (2-1 overall) came back with a goal in the 71st minute by Morgan Kistler that appeared to have spoiled Lakeland's chances at a comeback, but the Muskies responded just over five minutes later when
Mikayla Belasco (
Jr.-Muskegon, Mich.), Jimenez and Sperber executed a pretty play resulting in Sperber's second goal of the season to cut Monmouth's lead to 3-2. Lakeland continued to pressure in the final minutes and pushed well into the offensive end a number of times, but got no further.
Monmouth held a 9-5 edge in shot attempts. Steinbock and Reimer both made one save each for the Muskies.
