PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) stayed hot with two more goals and the Lakeland University men's soccer team carried play much of the way and eventually pulled away to defeat Martin Luther (Minn.) College 2-0 Sunday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Davis-Troller scored for the third straight match and has four goals in his last three games after recording both Muskies tallies Sunday.
Roman Riggs (
Fr.-North Liberty, Iowa) and
Owen Bishop (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) also added assists and Lakeland evened its record for the season at 2-2 with two more games left on an early-season four-game homestand.
The Muskies outshot the Knights (0-3-1 overall) 8-0 in the first half but still were knotted in a scoreless tie until the 56th minute. Riggs battled two defenders for the ball just past midfield and slipped a pass ahead to Davis-Troller on the right, and Davis-Troller took one touch before shooting across goal into the left side of the net past MLC goalkeeper Nicholas Russ for the game's first goal.
Martin Luther followed with its best five-minute stretch of the match, and the visitors from New Ulm, Minn., had their best opportunity in the 60th minute when Silas Gawrisch stopped, crossed over and from 20 yards out and had a one-on-one shot at goalkeeper
Andrew Davison (
Jr.-Elburn, Ill.), who came out from goal enough to limit Gawrisch's angle and got a piece of the ball to preserve the shutout.
Lakeland would have plenty of opportunities as the second half went on with Davis-Troller,
Brahm Dell Adema (
Sr.-Plano, Texas) and
Austin Eigenberger (
So.-Grafton, Wis.) all threatening. The Muskies also substituted frequently late in the game to keep fresh bodies on the field, but the Knights continued to lurk until Bishop's feed led to Davis-Troller's second goal and a 2-0 lead with just under three minutes left.
Lakeland outshot Martin Luther 22-4 for the game and posted an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. Russ made 10 saves for the Knights while Davison stopped two shots in the second half after
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) played the first half.
Davis-Troller has already tied his collegiate career high for goals in a season set as a freshman in 2022 with four goals, and the senior is up to 11 goals for his career, most of any current Muskie.
The Muskies are home again Wednesday when they host Lawrence University at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field. Lakeland will be looking for three wins in five games for the first time since 2018 and just the third time in 16 years.
