MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team ran into some tough competition from Minnesota on its second and final day at the Augsburg Invitational, falling twice by sweep.
The Muskies fell to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) College 25-16, 25-20, 25-14 in their first match on Saturday before dropping a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 decision to the host school Augsburg. Lakeland finished the tourney with a 2-2 mark after also winning twice on Friday and is now 4-5 overall on the season.
The Muskies struggled to follow up two strong wins on Friday, hitting just .062 against Gustavus Adolphus (6-1 overall) and then posting a -.033 attack percentage against Augsburg, easily the team's worst hitting of the season and its worst in eight years, since a -.034 mark against Wartburg (Iowa) College back in 2017.
Lakeland's best chance at a set win came in the second set against a good Gustavus Adolphus team receiving votes in the AVCA/NCAA Division III top 25 coaches poll. The teams were tied 11 times in the set, the last time at 19-19 after consecutive kills by
Samya Hughes (
Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), but the Gusties scored six of the final seven points to take the set.
Hughes finished with 11 kills and added eight digs against Gustavus Adolphus.
Ryan Figi (
Jr.-Hartland, Wis.) led the team with nine digs and
Sydney Gay (
So.-Rice Lake, Wis.) totaled 25 assists.
Kenzie Jackson (
Fr.-Mansfield, Texas) led the Muskies with five kills in the second match against Augsburg. Hughes and
Caitlyn Pernsteiner (
Jr.-Arpin, Wis.) added two service aces each.
The Muskies are back on the road again next weekend traveling for the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Lakeland takes on nationally ranked UW-Whitewater to open the tourney on Friday and also will face the ranked host school UW-Eau Claire and Carleton (Minn.) College on Saturday.
